Here's a warning if you are considering a GE Profile. Ours is a little over 3 years old and the panel needs replacing. For $600!!! (GE repairmen were out this morning. I told them I had to think about it. I'm so angry I could spit. The original price for the slide in stove was $1600 (now it's about $2000) and they want $600 3 years later?)

If you do buy one, be sure to get the extended warrantee.

What about Frigidaire Professional slide-in? How bad is it? Salesrep told me it's a level lower then KA or Bosch, but both of them got rather mixed reviews...

... or Kenmore Elite?

I don't attempt to save money here, but I don't want to pay extra just for look if quality of Bosch or KA are not any higher...

My experience with the Bosch Integra slide in was lousy so personally I won't buy from Bosch again. If you do a search you will find some threads about it and the Kenmore Elite.

I now have the Kenmore Elite(made by Frigidaire) which I think cooks better than the Bosch. It really isn't any cheaper unless you can find it on sale at Sears and I have seen it on sale for 20% off. You just have to watch for the sales.

The oven on the Kenmore is a little smaller than the Bosch. Not a huge deal for me even though I bake a lot. I definitely like the cooktop on the Kenmore much better. The burners seem to be more powerful. I have the one without any knobs and I really like it. It also has a warming drawer which comes in handy. I've only had it for 6 weeks so I can't comment on reliability at this point except to say it worked when it was installed.

I will put this disclaimer here about my Bosch. My whole unit may have been a lemon I don't know, but there customer service experience was horrible. That definitely steers me away from them.

Another thing to consider is service in your area. I live in a rural area. There were 2 authorized repair companies. Neither one had a clue. They had never even seen the range before.

Another complaint about the KA and the Bosch is the noise of the cooling fan. The Bosch is noisier than you would expect. The Kenmore I have is almost silent.

For as popular as GE appliances are, the price of replacement parts for them is a dirty little secret. GE prices for parts are high, even when they've only stuck the GE label on someone else's part. Couple that with build quality that is less-than-state-of-the-art and, well....

I would second the nomination of Frigidaire, either under their own name or as Kenmore Elite. My Frigidaire (gas freestanding) range has all the features and performance I want (n.b., I'm not a restaurant chef or baker cooking at home) and the build quality is good for the money you spend. I've also had Whirlpool/KitchenAid ranges (again, gas freestanding) that I've liked. The Frigidaires are a little less expensive, feature for feature.

Yes, the GE secret motto is "Replace, don't repair".

Another vote here for the Frigidaire/Kenmore Elite models, which have always been popular with users.

I have been very happy with my Thermador electric. The oven is convection/radiant and the 4 burners give you six sizes. One thing I noticed right away, the largest burner is larger than many other ranges.

I have the Frigidaire Gallery series glass top convection range. It's ok, but I am not crazy about the glass top. I didn't realize it would scratch so badly, especially on the lip edges. Also, the burners take a long time to cool off when you reduce the heat. I am a bread baker and the oven works well, but then my last oven was a 15 year old builder grade GE. I am considering switching to a Dual Fuel range. We haven't had any repairs or performance problems though. Not a bad stove for the money.

Hmm... Every single salesman was telling me Frigidaire isn't close to GE Profile/KA/Jenair/Bosch at what I'd call "functional quality", meaning how well the advertised features work. Example: all ovens have temperature control, but not all are equally precise, and so on. No one, however, could point me on specifics, it's just "Bosch uses better materials, and it's features implemented in better way". They also told me Bosch Canada is located right here, 20 min driving from my place, so I shouldn't be worry about service problems.

I don't know. I can't stand the look of GE and Kenmore, scared by Jenair and Bosch reported here problems, and concerned with bad feedbacks on KA performance...

I guess I have a problem... I used to enjoy bread making, and a consistent, predictable oven performance is crucial, at least for me. The only brands I couldn't find complaints in this department are GE and Bosch. And again, I have a serious problem with GE look...

I don't know what to tell you. I wasn't crazy about the look of the Kenmore either but it's growing on me. I also got this unit for a little over $1K not the usual $2K so I couldn't pass it up.

I know someone here had problems with the oven temp on the Bosch. I didn't really bake much because of my problems with the oven fan. I did make cookies using convection and was able to bake the 3 trays without a problem. The oven was a little bigger and I did like the rack positions better.

I haven't really baked in the Kenmore yet things have been really busy here. I've only used it for chicken fingers and oven fries. Things come out crispy and well cooked. If I bake this week I'll let you know how things turn out.

Since I can compare the Bosch and the Kenmore, I would have to say I like how the Kenmore cooks. Like I said before the cooktop seems better. With the Bosch my pans took forever to heat up. I thought maybe it was my new pans until I had the Kenmore installed.

Another thing to consider is where you purchase your appliances. I could have purchased mine from Sears for a slightly cheaper price but decided to give my business to a local store. It was a bad move on my part. With Sears I could have returned the defective unit. The local store was no help at all. I had to fight for over 5 months to get the thing out of my house.

I plan to get the Frigidaire dual fuel next month. I was very leery of the brand name because of the mediocre quality of Frigidare back in the 60's and 70's (I'm o-l-d), but the company has since been bought by Electrolux and quality seems much improved. In fact in Consumer Reports the dual fuel by FD was rated #4 over all brands in lowest rate of repairs. It was also rated very good by J.D.Powers. Reviews have been very good on Internet postings.
Most of all, I just like it - the design of the cook-top, the power level of the burners, the warming drawer feature, the way you can switch it back and forth from regular to convection (do they all do that?). You can buy a less expensive dual fuel with a Speed Bake feature. It is very similar to a true convection oven with a fan. I think that model has a storage drawer instead of a warming drawer.
My "big box" appliance store has given me a great price quote on this range and I am going to get a 5 year extended warranty. At $160 it is well worth it.
P.S. For what it's worth, I just had a GE washer go ka-put after 14 months. Could NEVER get a real person on the line. Will NEVER buy another GE major appliance again.

If it's any concellation, I like my Bosch electric range very much. It heats up quickly on the stove top and the oven cooks nicely.

As for the oven fan, yeah, it makes a sound when turned on, but not loud enough that you'll have to turn up the TV, radio, or voices to overpower the sound.

Just another thought. Today I stopped by Lowe's to get their price on a Fdaire range. If you buy the 5 year extended warranty you will get 4 years beyond the 1 year that comes with the range. For the one I am buying the warranty will be $150. Then after that Lowe's will cover the major parts of the range for an additional 5 years. Ten years in all for the "big pieces-parts". Not bad! I bought my GE washer from Lowe's and in 14 months it was stone cold dead. GE would do nothing as it was beyond the 1 year warranty, but Lowe's stood behind their product and refunded me almost the cost of a new Whirlpool washer. I can't recommend them highly enough.

this is slightly off topic, but years ago i had a warranty issue with a new kitchen aid dishwasher, and KA kept stalling me about replacing/repairing it. finally i made one phone call to sears and my original salesman said, "no problem, we'll replace it." so easy. since then i've had confidence in buying appliances from sears.

I'm interested in these too. I'm sort of leaning toward one of the double-oven jobs by GE or Maytag.

They come with a little oven, and another regular sized oven. From what I see on the web, GE has the bigger oven on top while Maytag has the little oven on top.

In most purchases in life, the 'sweet spot' is about 20% down from the top of the line. Bought a top of the line washer a while back (the brand is immaterial--this applies to most purchases); that was dumb. When the electronic panel fails, ya gotta replace the whole electronic guts of the machine at about 30 of the original purchase price.

I am just waiting for my new GE Profile range to be delivered. I think that GE profile comes with either smaller oven on top or bottom. I have chosen the latter. If you look at the model with the smaller oven on the top you will see that when the door of the main oven opens it would almost be resting on the floor. I can't get my head around this. I am thinking that the smaller oven may replace my toaster oven. As others have suggested I am getting te extended warrenty.

This is my suggestion. This Whirlpool 30" Self-cleaning Electric Range. It has the controls in front and has hot surface indicators which i find very convenient.

Bretonb: that's good to know that it goes either way. My thoughts are that this unit won't be my main stove, it'll be going into a rental house where an elderly person will live alone. An upper small oven may be more practical than a lower one for this particular application.
