I really want a Kenmore Intuition canister vac. Is it good?

I want a new vacuum so badly. We got a cat which I am mildly allergic to so I want to vacuum under beds, dressers, etc at least once a week and my Dyson doesn't go under anything, it is so huge. And the low reach attachment is a joke. Tiny 1 inch hole can't suck up anything.

So CR rates the Intuition very high and from looking at similar Kenmore vacuums they look like they would do a great job. But $600 is a lot to shell out after paying $500 just 3 years ago for the stupid Dyson. Have I mentioned that I don't like the Dyson? The wand irritates me to no end as well.

Anyway, I would love to hear from anyone who has one or has heard anything about them.

I don't have that exact Kenmore canister, but I do have a cheaper model (around $300.) I gave my daughter one for Christmas and was borrowing it all the time, so she bought me one. I have a Rainbow and prefer using the Kenmore. It really picks up. Hope this helps. Betsy.

I'm looking for a new vacuum too. Everyone says an upright is the best for carpets but I don't like having to use the attachments on the upright, the whole thing tips with me. We have one for our porch and it does really pick up the dog hair but I'm constantly running over the cord, too.

Seems like a canister is just easier to use overall. The hoses are longer, the attachments are easier and you can get under the cabinet lips with it. Most uprights are too thick at the base to get there.

Anyone else have comments on the best for use on carpets, tile, and wood?

If your Mother's Eureka is indeed 30+ years old, she would have had a canister that would have cleaned very well. Your mother would be better off purchasing a new vacuum cleaner. With the right choice, the new vacuum would clean the same. What would be better with the new is filtration and possibly noise level. Filtration, including bags, have improved, since that Eureka was made. Multilayer filter bags filter much better than the single layer used for your mother's Eureka. Depending upon which model and brand you look at, canisters with power nozzles can be lighter than that Eureka.

When my Hoover upright died I bought a Kenmore Progressive canister. I really like this vacuum and bought another one for my vacation home. It was the top rated canister when I bought it and has consistently been in the top for years. It easily goes under furniture. I buy the bags at Sears but Kmart might have them or or you can order online. I have hardwood, porcelain tile, wall to wall carpet, area rugs and some very expensive Persian rugs with fringe. One feature to look for in any vacuum you buy is the ability to control the suction - in addition to adjusting the height. I can quickly turn a small ring on the handle and reduce suction and then vacuum my small area rugs and Orientals without fear of sucking them off the floor or pulling out threads. Over the years we've had many dogs- German Shepherds from Germany who have a double coat, Laboradors and finally Rottweilers. It vacuum the dog hair better than the Hoover it replaced. Another advantage of a canister is the ability to remove the power head and vacuum drapes and cobwebs on the ceiling. My Kenmore has 2 lights - one on the power head and a second light on the end of the wand which illuminates what you're vacuuming even when the power head is removed. I love that feature. I can remove the power head by just pressing on small pedal on the head with my foot. It's very quick and I can reattach the wand without bending. I often removed the power head to vacuum along the baseboards. There are also the usual tools stored on the back of the canister - crevice tool, brush, HW floor attachment and also a handy, small motorized brush head (a Power Mate JR.). The cord is long. The vacuum is not lightweight - but I'm not sure what you consider heavy or light. I don't find it particularly noisy but again that's a individual preference. I have tried Miele's. Even though there's a big difference in price I would buy one if it had everything I wanted. I'd suggest you actually try your vacuum before purchasing it. I even took one of my small Persian rugs to the store and tried a couple of vacuums on it to make sure I could safely vacuum. The biggest issue I had with the Miele was that it was difficult to maneuver and I could feel pressure in my wrist and hand when I turned it. I even tried another one just to make sure. I don't remember the model name but it was their most expensive. It also didn't have two lights or the suction control on the handle. This was 5 years ago so that may have changed. But the best advice is to try several out before buying to see what works for you. Try maneuvering one, see if it lays flat enough and then try carrying it around to check the weight.

Oreck. I got mine in about 2000. it came with a small canister vac too. I think it has a shoulder strap. I don't have stairs so have no idea what happened to it. but that sucker sucks up stuff no one knew was there. including dog hair. same with the upright - which only weighs 8lbs. check them out. qvc has them on as tsv every so often. check their website. it also has that hepa filter thing. I love mine. I needed something that wasn't heavy myself since I got sick. I've had hoovers, panasonic, kenmore, eureka and even an old, old electrolux (which i'd still have if it hadn't been stolen). non of mine ever lasted more than 5 yrs. the Electrolux I inherited from my MIL. also check for the oreck store in your area. i do think they have specials this time of the yr. and you can take it in for cleaning/checking once a yr - for free I think. but i've never taken mine in. the store is too far from me. tho the oreck guy says they'll give you a loaner while they check yours out. They run about 300.00. I love my Oreck!

Kenmore and Electrolux probably make the best intermediate priced canister vacuums. I have owned Miele, Kenmore, and Bosch canisters and finally spent the money on a Sebo canister. Among the higher priced canisters I find the Sebo 3.1 to be great. Heck, after being unhappy with various other upright vacuums I ended up buying a Sebo Automatic X4 for $699. While expensive, it works great--changing bags is a breeze--it automatically adjusts height on carpet and even on floors. I find that I almost never use the canister anymore, even though I have a lot of hard wood floors. To get my hard wood floors looking great I first vacuum and then use one of those microfiber flat mops. One slightly dampens the mop and the microfibers then go to work cleaning and shining the surface. I find it does as good a job as the old way I used to clean and shine the wood floors--which was by using a squeegee mop with clear vinegar and then following up with dry towel rags to dry and shine the floor. It comes out great, but it is far more work than the microfiber mops, which do just as good a job. Greg

I had an old used Electrolux canister that I absolutely loved. The pros were-it was great,it picked up everything in its path,the attachments worked very well. . The cons-it was somewhat heavy to drag around, and the hose kept getting clogged. I finally got sick of the clogs and replaced it with-in order, a Hoover upright bagless, a Eureka upright rated a "BestBuy" by Consumer Reports, and my current Bissell Grab and Go convertible. I have hated every one of the replacements, they "suck" or rather, don't suck at cleaning. I have considered both a Dyson and another Electrolux/Aerus . Someone else must have the answer. What is the best vacuum?

Well, I am home and so far I love this thing!!! I am way too busy with everything else but I did put it together and did quick around the living room, went under DS's bed a bit and did the rug by the front door and everything worked great. I want to tackle the stairs tomorrow and finish the rest of the house. OUr stairs haven't really been done in 6 years because none of our vacuum did those real well. I can't wait!

I really wished we could have afforded at Miele.
We just couldn't come up with the extra $300 or so.

Myclemintine... don't feel bad about not buying a Miele. While they are good machines, the mark up is HUGE and vac shops make a fortune on them. You spent a lot more money on your vacuum than "cheap people" who pick up the 49.99 dollar special at Wal-mart do every year or so and I have no reason to think you will not be satisfied with it. Congrats on your new machine :o)

Thanks Vacuumfreak! What a nice thing to say. My cousin is coming tmorrow to buy the Dyson and she has always bought cheap vacuums every year so she is very excited about having a "real" vacuum.
I cleaned the living room furniture last night and it was a breeze, I love the handle on the hose. I am going to love this.
