buying a used sub zero

Hello. I've been offered to buy an 8-yr-old Sub Zero 600 series 30" fridge/freezer, all stainless, for $1200. Single owner, no repairs, everything in fine working condition. My concern is primarily the age of the unit--is it too old to pay that kind of money? Any feedback appreciated...thanks.

Search this board about buying used appliances -- there are few reasons why you would want an old refrigerator. Namely, excessive energy usage compared to today's models.

If you really want it, it's probably not worth more than $300~$500. No appliance store would want it, and a junk hauler would charge the seller to pick it up! It really has little value...

8 years old is just broken in for a SZ. It was made this century, has no service history and costs 15% of a new one.

$1200 is a steal if you want a built in and you are on a tight budget.

Joe , I'm going to assume rflatx isn't a off the grid tree hugger since (s)he is looking at a built in anyway. That said, the difference in xtra cost to run that SZ over say a new Thermador 36" built in is going to ammount to way less that 100 bucks a year. Is it less efficient , YEP, is it something to sweat over, NOPE.

Also, you guys tell me what else in real stainless steel hat can be had for $1200 ???

I Salute them!!!!!! Somebody adhering to the law of Supply and Denand. Compare this to that other company that just had 5 to 10% increases in prices, and at least according to one poster, They couldn't see any significant differences between the 09 & 2010 Models, not even offering the glide out shelves--I hope that company increases their prices by 50%!!!---after all they are still about 2x behind gagennau?--undoubtedbly the finest ovens made------Commmmmmmmeeeeeeeoonnnnnn me fib??? i can't stand to order from anyone in new orleans--my experience calling the authorized dealers and asking for prices was that bad! i got my big sz fridge in january and regret buying it in town. i just bought four miele appliances last month online and new orleans lost my business. there are a few good appliance places with friendly salespeople, but they don't deal in the higher end.

$1000 is an incredible price for the water/ice dispenser on the SZ, so I'm curious as to whether those here who've bought one like theirs, if they've had problems, and in general whether they thought it was worth it. If SZ didn't want a $1000 premium, it wouldn't be quite so hard to choose between the models with and without.

By having it stored at the store you let them maintain it, warrantee it, control it, oversee it, see to it, all during this time, which may last 6-8 months or may last far longer. By having them deliver it when you need it, you get the best of both worlds. A store is a storage and display volume. Today, it's called a warehouse when it holds many wares not for display. Don't take it out of their store and become a "store/storage/ware-storage/" all by yourself (there's lots of new risk, and no gain corresponding to the risk). Buying it today means you have locked the price you pay them. Sounds to me like a small advantage. If you need other appliances consider negotiating to get some other attached statement. E.g. max price for the following other items if order and delivered in 2011 is __. The manager and salesman might go for it.

My built in SubZero is 21 years old. Looks as good as new.... crisper drawers beautiful, shelves pristine. Four sons yanked on the door continuously for about 20 years. In that time I've had two very simple cheap repairs. I haven't priced them in years obviously, but if you're seriously considering one, I'd say that 8 years isn't very old for a SZ.
