I have a stainless steel counter, stove, dishwasher, ovens, and fridge and have found, if I'm going to use a cleaner, that no one cleaner works on all of them. The cleaner that came with the ovens works best on them, Weiman Stainless Cleaner works best on the fridge and Stainless Steel Magic works best on the stove. I have never tried Dirtex, but I'm going to buy some because of all the other uses it has. That being said, I have had the very best success by not using any cleaner at all--just water and a microfiber cloth as laynie mentioned. It works beautifully once you get rid of all the previous cleaner that has been applied and it leaves no streaks whatsoever. My problem is that I have a cleaning lady who insists on spraying cleaner on the fridge. I'm just waiting for her to use it all up. I won't be replacing it. Maybe I should just hide it.

That was me sayde! :-) It works really well on SS. You need to remove any and all residue from the other products you've used (I used BKF--Barkeeper's Friend on a blue scrub sponge, and scrubbed all the 3M residue off our built-in fridge--tried to stay with the grain, but probably scrubbed in a circular motion, too, or whatever worked to get the SS as oil-free as possible). You may need to give it a few or more passes with the sponge, and then wet microfibers or paper towels or rags to clean off all the "schmutz." Then you can use the alcohol-water spray and a microfiber to clean, and even spot-clean your appliances. BTW, it took awhile (a few cleaning sessions) for all the residue to be completely removed (I noticed a small spot or area here or there that must have resisted my initial scrubbing). I still can't get over the difference. It was a royal PITA to clean the fridge before, and it is so amazingly easy now.

White bottle with silver lettering? - sounds like it could have been a Restoration Hardware product, perhaps? I don't think they have any more of their cleaning products, however. I've had something called "Shiela Shine" for nearly 2.5 years - comes in a tin can that I was unable to open for nearly those 2+ years so I had never used it. Well, I did finally knock it open last weekend to use, and this stuff is unbelievable. Got my SS spotlessly spotlessly clean, cleaned away all vestiges of water spots and amorphous spots that simply wiping down with a MC would not. In the 4 intervening days since I worked on my DW and oven (dont' think I did anything else as I did this at 2:00am coz I couldn't sleep) I have not gotten any marks on either. I don't know how well it will keep marks at bay but I am really quite happy with this stuff. Both our appliances look spotlessly clean and absolutely brand new. We got this from our appliance shop - they gave or sold it to my DH when he ordered the appliances (stainless steel all). They had remarked that we'd need it with the order we'd just placed and that they recommend it highly. Well, consider me converted after not even bothering to open the tin for 2+ years.

I think you can definitely mix them. However, I wouldn't mix them on the same wall. For example, if your fridge and your range are on one wall in black stainless, you could add a regular stainless DW and microwave in the island. If you're going this route, carry the mixed metal idea through to your faucets, hardware, and lighting, too. Lots of great photos on this site with mixed metal finishes in kitchens. All that said, I wouldn't do this if you're planning to sell the house in a few years. If it's a look you love and you will be in your home for many years to come, go for it.
