Sub Zero With Side Panels

Does anyone have a Sub Zero with stainless steel side panels installed? I don't want everything to be built in, but Sub Zero has some nice options that are only 27 or 30" wide, if they could be made to be freestanding.

I'm pretty sure SZ supplies them, but I wanted to know how they look, etc., since they designed to be built in.

Thank you, this is VERY helpful and so far proving my point. Any more? (And, I'd also love to know the length of the appliance handles. The largest I can find is 18" and most seem to be 12")

BK - you are just flat out wrong wrong here. SZ makes their own fridges in their own factories, and about the only thing that is of Whirlpool design is the $50 ice maker unit that 60+% of the industry uses ! They fabricate their own steel and plastic cases, source their own, copper and glass, spray their own insulation , designed their own ethelyene filter, and on and on. Whirlpool wasn't even in the fridge business until a decade after SZ was producing theirs , and the only reason Whirlpool got in it was because of a merger. and, we all know about mergers. SZ has and these units in real homes for twelve plus months already , so they kinda know what is flawed with them. These also aren't just some half baked platform off the drawing board like your Maytag example. Further , Maytag ceases to exist because they were boneheads. Their Neptune debacle blew a hole in the ship, and the Amana acquisition enlarged it. And guess who picked up the pieces folks? Yep, BK's white knight and general do gooder, Whirlpool. Happy, I know it's a tough decision for you right now with this model change especially since they are different sizes. I would go for he new design, simply because that 7xx platform is almost twenty years old now and the 36" one is not the best size anyway. Have you considered one of the 36" ers from one of the Miele, Gaggenau, Thermador cousins? They are all top quality and roughly the same price as that 736. Available now and first of the year no changes, proven platform with nice features, and they integrate very smoothly.

I had a 42" SZ side by side in my apartment before renovating. When I redid the kitchen, I put in a 36" french door over under model. There are several things about a side by side which I dislike--consider and see if you care: (1) in the side by side, the fruit and vegetable drawers are on the bottom whereas they are at a more convenient waist-height in the over under model--to me that is the real deal breaker; (2) in a side by side, the freezer is not wide enough--sometimes, I would need to put a sheet pan or similar item in the freezer and there was no room to lay it flat--annoying but not as big a deal as the placement of the produce drawers and (3) I found the multiple drawers in the freezer to hold less than the large divided drawer in the over under model--not that big a deal but definitely a minus.

SubZero Classic with custom side panel accessory kit - Anyone do this?

Our SZ has a flat side panel on the right more like 7/8 of an inch that is identical to the cabinets and butts flat against them with a tiny crack separating upper and lower cabinets and fridge. Same panel on left side that is open to passage way has a panel like the fridge front on top of it. Photo seems tiny, not sure what will happen when I post.

Our SZ 680 currently has side panels - white ones - so we could use it for a few years freestanding, while planning our house upgrade. The panels are SZ parts, fairly heavy, and look fine. Magnets stick to them too. ;-)

I'd recommend having a SZ installer install the panels. That way he is responsible for any problems when drilling the necessary holes for the screws. (In our case, they drilled through one of the panels by accident, so had to order a new one. The replacement came dented. The replacement after that was ok and successfully installed.)

It seems that the integrated models (and hence the 27") can't be done this way, which is too bad, but I'd love to see any pictures anyone has of a built-in model with the side panels to make it a free-standing.

Right now it is sitting in my garage with stuff piled all around it, until the remodeling/expansion of our house is complete. Wouldn't be very photogenic...

We bought the SZ in Y2K, and in the old configuration it replaced a freestanding, avacado green, fridge. The old fridge sat between a counter and a doorway, and had a cabinet overhead. The area was just wide enough to accomodate the 42" SZ. We also had to remove the overhead cabinet.

After we had the SZ installed, I built a simple soffit over the top to match the cabinets. (This wasn't hard as the cabinets were very plain European-style inset doors. It was about $5 in wood from Home Depot, plus about 1/2 hour in my time.)
