When our 7 year old GE Profile over-the-range Microwave went out a few months ago, we wanted to get a convection/microwave unit so we would not longer need a Toaster Oven/Convection sitting on the counter taking up space. But we had to find one that would work in our space, as there is a full-granite backsplash that comes right up under the cabinets. The problem was finding a unit where the rear-wall template wouldn't have to be drilled into the granite. All of the KitchenAid/Whirlpool units were 17-18" down in the back, which would put them 2-3" down into the granite. So we ended up having to go with another GE and got the JVM1790SK for about $430 (it was only $60 more than the non-convection PVM1870SMSS). We've used it for about 2 weeks now and works good. Have done some convection baking and fast-bake (that uses both the Microwave and Convection together). So far the only thing that hasn't turned out grate was pizza, as it was still soft in the middle (not crispy). That's probably because there' no bottom heating element (there's just a 1550W coil on the right-side around the fan).

cmg01 ~ Do you know how the Monogram microwave is different from the regular GE or GE Profile? We're considering the GE Profile PEB2060 but if the Monogram (which is a better-looking unit, IMO) is better, then we might pay for the upgrade... antss ~ Thanks. I will check out the Viking. I do LOVE the Panasonic microwaves -- both the look and their features. However, they don't make their own trim kits (I called and they referred me to Microtrim). I have only about a week to get this delivered for the contractor to install for us, so Microtrim will be cutting it close, and also they only make the trim w/ the slats, not the smooth kind. Most of the other brands I can just order directly from the dealer who got all of our kitchen appliances. We're already getting the Gaggenau Combi-Steam, so thought a "gee wiz bang speed oven" would be overkill (although I'd love one!). That's why we're going for a reg ol' microwave w/ trim kit.

Yes, it is possible! We accidentally discovered this when faced with the exact same dilemma you describe. Folks on this forum kept telling me there are only a few microwave manufacturers. Lo and behold, when we bought the much less expensive replacement, it had the exact same bottom footprint piece! So it fit like a glove (Sharp in a KitchenAid trim kit) I think the key is to try and match the dimensions exactly, for example mine was 1.6 cubic feet and so was the replacement. We truly thought we'd just put it in the hole and were delighted that the trim fit. Good luck!

Does anyone have experience with the Panasonic NN-SN686S Countertop/Built-In Microwave, and the 27" Trim Kit for 1.2 cuft Microwaves, NN-TK621SS? How is the fit of the trim kit? I am seeing all kinds of reviews about an ugly gap around the microwave? It will be going into a 27" Schrock microwave base cabinet (for an under the countertop install). Thanks!
