sleevepresto, A floating vanity gives you some under cabinet storage while giving a more spacious feeling to a small bathroom. I thought about adding rope lighting below mine to highlight this, but I decided it might be too busy for the room size, and that would defeat my primary design objective. If you need more storage, could you incorporate additional between-the-studs storage besides the medicine cabinet? I bought two between-the-studs medicine cabinets that look like picture frames, but I'm not ready to use them yet. They're for my master bath remodel. They're very expensive, but very nicely made. Thank you. Though I love the look of allover white hex, in the powder room I am trying to pull some of the colors in the art glass into other hard surfaces in the first floor. I will try to attach photos that show the relationship between the front door which is art glass and the powder room at the end of the hall next to the stairs. I have also included a shot of the front door and the windows in the dining room.There is also a shot of the powder room as it is now with the toilet and sink just resting in place. On the floor are some paper tests for one pattern. In the shot from the hall, the two pipes delineate where the radiator will be. I can add post some photos tomorrow of other (smaller) patterns we are trying. There actually is a fair amount of floor visible, just not around the edges. The pattern will also be visible from the foyer. Pardon the poor quality of the cel phone shots. I always like seeing visuals, so I thought this might help. I hope my first attempt importing from photobucket is successful.

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

My dad can actually take some steps into the bathroom with a quad cane so he can leave his wheelchair outside and I could position a chair near the sink and shower bench And that will make all the difference -- and he's certainly not alone in using a wheelchair, yet not needing it 100% of the time. I've had a couple students who used wheelchairs to reach the classroom, but then could transfer themselves to a student desk. The question is, will he continue to be able to do this as he ages? Some conditions are progressive, others are not. Be sure to include ample grab bars in the right places. Consider where the wheelchair would be left -- in a hallway? Consider the door swing -- after he's exited the chair, he must maneuver around the doors, which seem to be taking up all the hallway. Then, once he's in the room, he must be able to reach and close the two large doors. Realistically, he'd probably need some help entering the room. but I don't know that moving is something that people take so lightly. No, moving for the sake of one bathroom makes no sense. It would be easier to renovate, even if it meant leaving this bathroom "as is" and adding a bump-out somewhere. I would do a white subway on the walls with a decorative white profile pattern tile for interest 1/3 of the way up. I assume I would need a pedestal sink or a console sink. White is definitely your best option in such a small space. You're fortunate to have a window too; a good, big mirror will reflect that natural light and make this a nice space. I agree with a pedestal sink; it'll visually open things up. Since you have no storage in this bathroom, I'd add an extra-deep medicine cabinet (they can be 6" deep) and a glass shelf above the sink. I'd also go with one of these towel shelves at the end of the shower: Someone actually suggested maybe a stationary glass panel shielding the toilet so the seat and toilet paper don't get wet. Stationary glass makes perfect sense in this situation. I'm not sure where you could place a toilet paper holder in this design ... you'll probably have to have one of those freestanding things.
