Brickeye is right. More to the point, only a trained and experience HVAC tech can size a system. They have to come out to your house to determine this. It's involved and complex; much more than just the sq footage of your home. Any reputable HVAC company will come to your home and create an estimate for free. Have several of them out, go with the best. Finally, if you were able to somehow get the equipment through alternate avenues, the good quality manufacturers void the warranty if you do not purchase through an authorized dealer.

What would be a general estimate on the HVAC system parts and labor? We are in Fairfax VA. Again, I am not looking at very expensive equipment. Based on what i was told what my house may need it would be 60BTU, 2 stage, 90% efficiency. It is roughly $1500 for the AC and furnace. How much would be the labor piece?

I would want my system to be correctly sized (a Manual J calculation can accurately determine this) and I would want my choices to be clearly explained, with regard to efficiency (SEER rating), zoning, air quality, brands, warranties etc. I would want details of the installation e.g. how the ducts are to be sealed etc. if they need to be replaced. These are very important details. Only a reputable and experienced dealer/installer can do this.

HVAC by its nature needs to be as inconspicuous as possible but it can have the greatest impact on the health and comfort of your family. This is not a place to cut corners IMHO! In any case your idea of buying your own equipment may very well not be the least expensive way to go.

Kotena - you don't list a size in tonnage on your needs. That makes me think that you don't have the knowledge to be trying what you are doing. 60k btu is fine on the heating side but what is the a/c? This stuff is very complicated and most houses need more than just new units as very few were done right.

new install (mid-range brand..not top tier, not builder's model..mid range) should run you about 7,000 to 8,000.
90+ gas furnace 14 SEER a/c.(based in prices in my area)
Ductwork will depend on type of ducts..flex vs hard pipe.
Flex should be about $200 per run, plus costs of supply and return plenums. hard pipe ducts are more costly.
both should be insulated to a minimum of R-6, although R-8
upgrade cost is well worth it.

as for install, all should be mastic sealed, no duct tape,
or foil tape although a foil/mastic tape is approved.
reducing duct and return air leakage is your best savings
and worth the shopping and education to do correctly.
materials are not expensive, and will last for decades when properly done.

tonnage will be all over the place when you start getting bids, as will equipment choices. rules of thumb..here bubba a/c uses 400 sq ft per ton for houses on piers
500 sq ft per ton for houses on slabs. (south La.)

my way of thinking is to fix the house..seal it air tight,
increase thermal barriers (insulation). when house has less air leakage (infiltration)it will require less tons of a/c.

Okay, we charge on average of around $6,000 for a new, high efficiency system. That is for retro-fit, though. New construction will cost more b/c of the need for duct work. You need to be supercareful with the ducting because, in our area at least, many contractors do poor quality work b/c the homeowners rarely check the actual work. I cannot stress enough how essential it is for you to do this through a reputable contractor. Many will take payments or have in-house financing.
