Tub Reglazer Damaged Tile - Can the Glaze be Removed?

I am not looking forward to telling the company I hired for my reglazing that the person who did it missed covering/taping spots on my brand new porcelain floor and wall. (One obvious piece of damage is a triangle about 1" long and 1/2" wide - white ceramic glaze on grey calacatta tile.)

Could you please let me know if you had the same problem and what you did to fix it? I am understandably upset and would appreciate your letting me know what, if anything, worked for you.

Good question. I don't see, though, how it's incumbent on you to find a solution. Let them come in, show them the problem, and if they refuse or give you a hard time, THEN let us at em!

Hi, Bill. This occurred to me but I wanted to be prepared prior to a conversation with them/their arrival. I wanted to see if their solution is the same as what you and other tile experts recommend. Seeing postings would let me know that there are solutions out there other than replacing the tile. (By your posting I am guessing there are options.)

Another question I have is if it is common to reglaze over the grout at the bottom of the tub? I am going to have to try to clean the grout line or caulk the bottom of the tub but maybe this is a routine part of the procedure.

I'll keep my shirt on until I call the reglazer tomorrow. I have posted some pics in the meantime. (The last picture is the undamaged tile in case I need to share this link with the reglazer.)

I think it very much depends on the company you use. We plan to reglaze a tub in our current house, because demo-ing it is not practical in terms of other concerns. We are leaving a still-perfect old mud job tile surround and having the tub redone. In our previous house, we had an old cast-iron tub from the early 1900s reglazed and it lasted for 15-20 years without problems (it was still fine when we sold the house so I have no idea what happened subsequently, if anything). But there are some real scam guys out there in that particular business, so you really need to research the company you are using, get references, etc. But we were VERY happy with the job at our old house so as long as you find a firm in which you have confidence, I think you'll be pleased.

Tub/Tile Acrylic Surround vs. Reglazing

My 1963 vintage tile tub/shower is leaking along the front wall grout seam because the tub settled, opening up a grout line. I have stopped the leak by bracinig the tub (from below) and regrouting the joint. I also plan on either a tub/tile reglaze or having an acrylic liner put in to make doubly sure the leak does not return. It caused a bit of wood rot. I contacted the following for quotes: Bath Fitters, Re-Bath, and BCI Acrylic Bath Systems. Bath Fitters quoted $3800 for a reline of the tile and tub (I thought that was rather steep!) and gauranteed no leaks and a lifetime warranty. I was told that water could not get between the tub and liner. BCI said he did not suggest a bath tub liner (odd, because that is what their web site is mostly about), because the caulk seal fails and water gets between the tub and liner and can not be removed, but suggested a reglaze of the tub and either a reglaze of the tile or an acrylic liner over the tile. He quoted about $800 for a reglaze of the tub and tile and about $1500 for a reglaze of the tub and an acrylic liner over the tile. The price seems reasonable. Re-Bath comes by tonight. BCI and Bath Fitters have contradicting pitches, as far as the tub is concerned. I also had a house once where the tub was reglazed (about 1990), and the glazing chipped off around the drain. BCI said this WILL NOT happen because of improvements in the reglaze process. I have also heard negative things about Bath Fitters I am kind of at a loss right now as to what to do. How much should a tub and tile acrylic liner run (Washington, DC area) and is there concern for leakage between the tub and liner? Are regalzes any good? Any input concerning this would be helpful. After slipping on a plastic mat with suction cups that didn't grip the tub, I bought non-slip shower treads on Amazon. They're made by a company called SlipX Solutions. Several posters on GW recommended them. They're fabulous: clear, not too visible, clean easily, and best of all provide excellent traction. I highly recommend them.

To put in a new tub or to glaze the old one...it's the same dilemma I'm in. This is what I can share with you right now. 1. I got an estimate of 15 hours x $50. just to put in a new tub; that's excluding the cost of the tub and plumbing. I'm getting another estimate on Aug. 6. 2. I called several refinishers. The quotes ranged from $275. to $425. to refinish a cast iron tub. One company called Todd's Porcelain and Fiberglass Repair etches the tub with acid and then sprays an acrylic based paint. The other one is Miracle Method. They don't etch the tub but use a proprietary bonding agent. They said they use an acrylic urethane enamel that is similar to the paint used on aircrafts. Both companies quoted $425.00 with a 5-year warranty. Both said the finish should last longer than 5 years...so I asked why can't they guarantee it for more than 5 years. Todd's offers an extended 2 year warranty for $69.00. I would also appreciate any help.

I'd also bring up the grout concern to them. You paid good money for this, let them earn it. As for whether or not it's common, I can't answer that. I've never once seen a bathroom after a tub was reglazed. But I will say it doesn't seem right.

The tub reglazer returned and fixed the problems using denatured alcohol. Whew!

Lessons learned:
(1) If you are considering a tub reglaze, be sure that the reglazer covers everything in the bathroom. My reglazer did not cover the light fixture or the top of the shower curtain rod (he covered the bottom) and the spray collected on these surfaces.
(2) Check carefully the taped area where the tub meets the floor. My reglazer glazed the grout in places and the glaze line was uneven. The second reglazer had to use a razor blade and alcohol to clean up the line.
(3) Be sure to get this done last in a remodel or new construction. I had the painter come after the reglaze thinking that the tub would be cured but my painter was nervous about scratching it and the surface is more delicate than before. He covered the tub with towels and then plywood, and was careful to step lightly on the tub during the painting process. If he was not that careful, the tub would have been damaged.

I'll post a picture of the tub when I post pictures of the finished bathroom.
