Are you going with the smooth or the roughsawn style hardieboard? If your going with the rough/rustic craftsman style I'd try to go with a natural stone that picks up some of the darker brown/grey/charcol colors and grout to match the darkest color as the roof is dark. For any accents I'd do a darker stain on decking with white accents. If your going with a smooth and more beachy/coastal look I'd do a grey with darker grout to match with lots of white trim. I don't think I'd do the black shutters if it were me.

We are using the select cedarmill hardiplank lap siding (resembles cedar siding). It's very much a darker green compared to what "sage" brings to mind. Thank you so much for the links!!

The french country style to me brings to mind the overgrouted substantialy blocky style of stonework. I think both the Greys or a natural can work but I think it depends on the accent colors your using...to me black and white accents and grey would be a natural blend but I have seen the color you chose (mnt.sage) work well with the brown/redish tones when paired with a stained wood, like posts or beam accents. You might do well to visit a quality stoneyard (we have LuckStone locally) and ask for advice with your samples. It's hard to tell with just the list of colors for me rather than the sketch of your exterior. Like is it a predominant wall of stone, just base of post and beam accents or foundation, steps,...

We are also putting Mountain Sage Hardie 8 1/2 in rough sawn style on a 2 story craftsman. We are using Sail Cloth trim, chestnut brown shakes on dormers, Black Shutters, and Dk Charcoal roof and brick with a gray/brown mix (sorry no pics yet) on the base of the house. I would personally not place red colored stain or stone near the Mountain Sage unless you are ok with it possibly looking like Christmas time to some people. We are going with a dark brown in order to avoid in red undertones.

Can't wait to see pics of what your Mountain Sage looks like going up since we aren't to that stage yet!

Actually dark reddish browns would look great with Hardie's sage color. Sage-y greens and reddish browns blend in a very earthy way. So take a look at this house from houzz.com also. It has your sage siding and dark (black?) roof and shutters and combines them with red/brown brick.

You didn't say where you were building. Here in the south with red clay everywhere I'd go with the redishbrown as it blends in with decking stain, where as in other area the natural surroundings dictate to me an organic feel when you use what's in the color scape of nature.

Ooo I certainly didn't want to imply red wouldn't look good. Definately not my intention at all, in fact I love the picture bevangle posted! (I will looking closer at their brick colors as I love the way they look, Thanks!!)
We are also building in red clay on a wooded lot. We choose the Mountain Sage and dark chestnut brown to mimick the color of the pine trees and their bark. I love houseofsticks' recommendation to choose organic colors from the surroundings.

Reds and greens together ARE kind of funny, aren't they? In bright clear tones, they do clash/pop in that jangling Christmassy way. But tone colors both down a bit with greys or browns and they blend gorgeously producing a very calming effect. Think "redwood forest."
