anyone have low-flow handshowers?

Hi all,
I have to purchase a hand-held shower that will be considered low-flow (2.0gpm or less).
we are doing a hand-shower only set up in most of our baths. I have been looking at the Hansgrohe Green line.

The same handshower design is sold as 2.0 gpm handshower or a 1.75gpm version. Both are considered water-saving, so would qualify for inspection.

If i want to be more green, i know i should pick the 1.75gpm showerhead. but am wondering, if the spray will feel like annoying trickling, etc.? would even the 2.0gpm be too weak to rinse out your hair?

I never used a low-flow handshower before. so not sure which to pick. I would love to hear of your experiences with these new low-flow showerheads!

We have one, though it's 5 years old so may not be comparable to current models. I'd need to look it up to find the exact model and flow, but we've been happy with it. I mainly notice the difference when I visit hotels or other places with very heavy flow shower heads, but at home I'm used to it, so I don't really think about it. Definely fine for washing hair! I was a little reluctant to go the handheld only route (husband chose this and felt strongly about it) but that has actually worked out really well. We use the handheld feature all the time with dogs and kids and it works quite nicely as a main shower.

If you're worried about the flow, though, maybe get the 2.0? Both are much more water efficient than older shower heads and at least on ours, we have some settings that use less water and some that use more, even within the lower flow. HTH!

I only own them long enough to find and remove the flow restrictors.

Their spray force is too feeble to rinse shampoo from my hair quickly - and I don't think 5 minutes at 2gpm as I rinse strand after strand saves any water compared to 15-30 seconds at 10gpm blasting my entire head.

Brian, You have laid out all the worries pretty well. The facts are: Pump operating correctly at 50-65 psi. 3 zones with 5 heads each 1" Dia. poly main with 3/4" Dia. laterals to heads. Literature says heads throw is 30 to 50 feet. Actual throw is 15 to 20 feet System is 17 years old. Notice gradual decrease in throw distance over 4 years. Most are original Rainbird heads. More Data needed: 1. Model No.s of heads and type. with that I can research throw distance per psi range for head. 2. Check pressure and flow from Pump or Tank outlet during operating irrigation system. 3. Is pump system separate from the house? 4. What is average level of Calcium and Iron in the water. Was the water in the well tested previous and could it be tested now. 6. Is the coverage still adequate or does the lawn now have dry spots? 7. What is the pumps design pressure and flow? Do you have the design curve literature? If not what is the make model, HP and amp required to operate the pump? I would start by checking from the source to the valves for design pressure and flow. If you had historical data for this you will see the pattern. This is just the beginning of the water audit for your system. Are you in for the long haul? Aloha

Anyone have a Kohler Flipside handshower?

The one that we looked at in the Kohler Design Center was the Flipside 03, which is the one that has a black plastic handle and the rest is chrome. It still felt very hefty (not plasticky) to me. The Flipside 01 and 02 both come in chrome and brushed nickel. The 01 is a little "squarer" and the 02 is a little curvier in its design. They are pretty big. I'm not sure on the dimensions of the head, but I'd say they are similar to what you think of for a regular showerhead vs. a hand shower. I don't think it would be appropriate for a kitchen as it looks very much like a showerhead ... definitely not like a kitchen sink thing. Here is a link that might be useful: Flipside

Slow down, NHB. Not everyone here is conservation Nazi. Some us believe that the world has enough water to support life as we know it. Actually, I have to be careful of using words like Âbelief,Â only because my every word is being monitored by PC nuts. So letÂs just say that I will not fault you for having enough HOT water to wash your tresses and still have some to massage your back before leaving for a dayÂs work, where you are less-loved than what I have already expressed for you. You did not define; "We have very low water pressure in our home." How do you know? Do you have a gauge reading? What is the source? City? Well? Tower? Can you tell us what you know for a fact? It is significant information. A restriction in a showerhead is typically a disc with a hole in it so small you might not see it in dim light. This is the Âflow restrictor.Â If you discard it, it will quit Âflow-restricting.Â But the fact is, you must have a sufficient supply and the means to deliver it. If the rest of your home seems to have this, you might just ignore that part. Then, all you have to do is decide whether or not the bath valves are performing as expected. I just want to share with you folks something I'm happy about... I'd bought an INSANELY expensive kitchen faucet ($1,180.00 if memory serves) by Jaclo - called their Steam Valve Original...it's a polished, 100% stainless steel (not brass underneath), wall-mounted faucet w/ a gooseneck that has a pull-OFF faucet which rests along the back of the neck. Anyway, after much research I'd fallen completely in love with this unique beauty of a faucet and was willing to go to finance hell in order to acquire it. But when I got it, it had low water-pressure! I was SOOOOO BUMMED. Anyway, they were surprised, saying their faucets rarely have problems and that the water flow should be good...and they do in fact stand behind their product (they'd better, for the money!) so they just sent me a replacement neck (all parts are replaceable) and lo and behold - after having the first one they gave me for a couple of months now and being used to it (and yes we opened it up and tried to find sediment that was caught in there, to no avail), the new one was SO POWERFUL! It's a world of a difference. So I just had to share! :) I love the faucet. Sorry this was so long... Lazygardens, how do you get 10gpm out of your shower? Do you run two at a time?

artemis, please do let me know which hand shower you got. the fact that is has lasted 5 years is great! it is difficult to find a good handshower. everything on the market now seems plasticky and likely to break after a few months...

lazygardens, do you really get 10gpm if you remove the flow restrictor? does it feel strong like a bath tub faucet then?

michoumonster, my wife's Hansgrohe handshowers are fine after 10+ years, despite being plastic (except for the chrome and gold plating).

This is done, at least partly, to avoid the problems of it getting too hot to hold and also causing damage if you drop it.

writersblock, that makes sense. i guess having plastic is not always bad.
