Master bath remodel starts this week -- YIKES!

I lived through the kitchen remodel a few years back with the help of Gardenweb. I lived through the mistakes, the contractor who suddenly took a week off with 1 day's notice... the choices.

But this master bath remodel -- has me crazy! Spent this weekend cleaning out the vanity, linen closet, closets. So not only will we not have a master bath for a month, the place will be a wreck -- boxes everywhere, clothes who knows where.

Since the master is on the first floor, its not like I can use the upstairs guestroom to hang things up!

Should be interesting when they come with jack hammers to break up the "jersey mud" floor and the mudded shower walls.

I work from home, so the disruption isn't just about home, its about work, too.

Thanks for letting me vent.

We're in the ending stages of our Master Bath remodel. We moved out of our bedroom, bathroom and closet in January and they started Feb. 1. I'm in one bath, dh is sharing with our son. Our clothes are on the third floor in baskets, messing up my office something fierce. It's JUST starting to wear on me. We installed an Elfa closet system and we won't be able to move stuff back in there until we finish up in the bedroom as well. I'm hating the chaos!

Mine is due to start in less than 2 weeks so I can relate. My contractor said that the job should not take more than 2 weeks barring something unforseen happening. I was happy to find a contractor who did not want to start the job until ALL the materials were on site, that way there will no hold up due to waiting for tile or cabinets or toilet or something to arrive. I hope he's right!

Depends. I just did a job where I charged just over $20K labor for about 1100 feet of tile, and that was on a SUBcontract-- not even the final cost to the owners! Of course, it was two mudset steam rooms in an operating corporate health club in Downtown Hartford, Ct., where it was costing me bigtime for parking, as well as being hellacious getting materials and tools in and out, and everything had to line up, and... and.... and.... There's got to be SOME reason why it's high. What kind of tile is it? Is it mud, or thinset? Is this new construction or remodel? is it ceramic or stone? No matter what, the price you have DOES sound way high, but I think I'd like to know a little more about the job before I give an opinion.

I'm calling this final until my next meeting with the GC: Deke, my current closet door is only 24", so I'm happy I'm gaining some space! Kirk, a towel warmer on the wall between the shower and entry door. I have almost 3' there, and the towel warmer in my current bathroom is 20" and pretty sufficient, so that's a go. Then a regular towel bar (also probably 20") on the wall between the tub and window. I'll see about doing a mock-up, but I'm picturing getting out of the shower -- with the entry door closed -- and having a pretty big space in front of me. Is your concern the space between the open shower door and the wall between the bath/bedroom? If the scale in the program is accurate, it's about 3'10" -- just using a tape measure, that feels like a lot of room to me. Maybe I'm not getting your question :)? Here's the current closet plan too -- I'm losing 10" of tall hanging space but gaining 110"+ of short! I might turn the double-hanging section on wall B into more long, or maybe make the drawers in B only 24" instead of the current 30". I love the hamper/linen wall A :). And finally, some 48" vanities -- the next to last one is the 55" one I can't use. My dilemma -- I really like the open shelf on 3 and 4, but really like the green glass on the others. Thanks for your input. The budget is $25-30K, in Los Angeles. That's about twice what we went into this "wanting" to spend. I'm not expecting to recoup the entire cost, but we're in a rapidly changing neighborhood with rapidly escalating home prices, so it's not totally outside the realm of possibility. It's also possible that we could stay much longer than I think. We bolted the foundation, restored/replaced the hardwood floors, removed/hid the popcorn ceilings, and widened the bedroom closet doors last year when we moved in. We got off easy on the asbestos, but doubled our costs when we found out all of our gas lines and half our electrical needed to be replaced ASAP. So yeah, I'm worried that our 20% contingency cushion won't cut it this time either. Option 2 opens onto the laundry alcove that is directly off the kitchen. I agree, it's not ideal. It is also more limiting in terms of potential future projects like a kitchen remodel. I'm really leaning toward the master suite. Additional storage will come from a built-in bench in the dining room window bay, custom surrounds for the laundry and refrigerator, and--who am I kidding?--probably a larger shed as well. Never buy a house without a garage.

Su Issac, what's good? Looks like you're throwing out questions and.... Anwyay, lets see if this helps: 1) If you can see all the chandeliers together, it make sense they relate. If you only see a chandelier in it's respective room, let it match with something in that room OR be so different it's THE feature of the room. 2) 'Optimal' layout - you'll get 10 different answers from 10 people (as you already are.) Here's what's good about YOUR layout - the tub in front of the window always make a nice scene, just make sure it stays from the inside and not from the outside, wink emoji. Large vanity more or less centered on tub is nice. Toilet room - when you have one you love it. MAYBE you could rotate the w.c. and enlarge that closet a little more. And hey -Less is More, but YES is also more. Big Master bathrooms... do you spend time in it? Yes? Have the budget? Yes? Than go big. 3) See above 4) If you put the shower fixtures on the right (short wall) you open an opportunity to change the finish along the long side IN the shower to make it pop & break up the long wall with the tub at the opposite end. Maybe even give it a lil' build-out & throw a niche in there for your shampoo's and stuff. 4 again) Very rarely do clients fit in a box - therefore their homes shouldn't either. Do what feels good - some people like a curated look, some people are eclectic, some mix it up. Don't worry about 'design rules' - a designer should really guide your vision, not impart their own because it's not our money, or where we sleep at night. Good luck & have fun, -f

I hope to start on ours in a couple months. But since it's DIY mostly we will be living in a mess for a while. I'm trying to convince DH that we will need to move out of our room into the guest room but he thinks it'll be fine. I am already having nightmares of dust getting into everything and rewashing all our laundry.

Ours took just over a year. Time flies when you're having fun! I work from home too and can relate, all you can do is take a deep breath and keep your eye on the prize. It's so wonderful when it's done.

Sympathies in advance: Ours is in week 9 now but we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. All materials were ordered 3 months ahead by the GC and were available as of the start date. We knew that there would be built-in delays in the schedule, for example, while granite was templated and cut. However, further delays occurred as the granite broke in the final cuts and we needed to locate another acceptable slab, needed to change the glass supplier at the last minute as the first one suddenly couldn't meet requirements, etc.

The noisiest part was the demolition in the first couple of days, so not so much of an issue although the vibrations wiggled loose the pot lights in our kitchen below! DH works from home and previously survived a kitchen reno, which took only 5 weeks in total, but was a much bigger disruption to the main living space.

Luckily we were able to move out of the bedroom and use another full bath. The bedroom was well draped in plastic and the floor covered with boards and tarps, but it was a disaster. Inconvenient yes, but well worth the effort to temporarily relocate. Just make sure you move enough of your stuff, just in case...

Hey all --

Demo began this morning -- so far no surprises, but there is still lots of demo to be done!

Cats are a little crazy being confined, so far that's the biggest problem!
