Fridge- who should I look at?

I need to think seriously about my fridge options now. I have a 36 inch wide spot, about 36 inches deep to put it in. I want stainless and bottom freezer. I currently have a side by side and two top freezers (garage and nannys kitchen in basement) so I know zero about bottom freezers.

I am unsure between french door and regular door- not really sure of pro/cons. I think I could probably swing a regular door layout wise if that was the way to go. I do not want an ice/water access on the outside (had one on side by side and realized AFTER the adjacent dining room floors were ruined that the line was slow leaking.) However, I would like water in the fridge.

Id like as big as I could go but I have only 36 inches wide and just barely that. I looked at the GE monogram french door and it seemed to me that it was hard to close the doors with the seals so I wasnt thrilled.

No idea where to begin- help!

Do you have restrictions in height? If not, the Liebherr is beautiful and the hinges allow it to be pushed back so that it looks built-in. It is too pricey for me, but oh how I love it!

Well it looks really nice, but at a starting price of $5K - no way!

The appliance stores are pushing us to GE's....thoughts on that? I am beginning to feel like everyone is a secret employee of GE.

Price negotiations are variable. In this case I would deal only with the manager, in person, using cash and figure the price you want including tax to get the deal done. Go to him, ask him to work with you to get a deal done, point out the damage, finalize the warranty, make the offer and be ready to walk. In fact, taking a lap around the area to let him think about losing your sale can be the decider. It kind of restarts the process and almost requires him to modify his position.

Must/should I really 'enclose' the fridge?

We have exactly the same situation. As originally planned, the fridge would not be "enclosed." However, we will be buying a new SS FD model when we move in. Most SS fridges sold these days do not have SS on sides. We think most of them look really cheesy and would not want a plasticky side showing. While you can still get a fridge with real SS sides, we did not want to be limited to the few models that still offer that. The door to our screened porch will open toward the refrigerator. We think it will look much more finished if it opens next to a panel rather than next to the fridge. We also like the idea of a deep cabinet above the fridge. For all of these reasons, we have decided to go with panels on the sides of the fridge. The custom cabinet maker we now working with builds their cabinets so the opening is 37" instead of 36," which I really like. I think 36" is too tight for most of the FD fridges, which all seem to be 35 plus inches wide.

I wouldn't worry about what the future owners will be committed to buying in on down the line. If it looks great, it will be easier to sell. I can't imagine anyone thinking they don't want it because someday they'll be committed to a counter depth refer. If the wall isn't load bearing, also get a bid for taking it out completely and having a piece of wood (that matches the cabinets) added on that side instead of rebuilding the wall.

When the salespeople are pushing one particular brand, it could be a special sales incentive period where they get extra money for selling that brand. Do your research and go with what YOU think has the best features, quality and price.

Also, you will find that this particular forum has a bias toward expensive brand appliances. But there are many people here looking for and who purchased mid-range items, hopefully you will get good feedback. It would be helpful if you would mention your price point.

Make sure to doublecheck all along the pathway the frig will take to your actual spot to make sure you can install a Standard depth 36" wide frig. We nearly purchased one, only to realize that the space in front of the frig spot was not big enough for this type of frig.

I also would recommend making up a list of your requirements and how you like to store things before going to look at frigs. And I do recommend looking at frigs in person to check the following:

Can you reach the back of the frig?
Can you reach the top shelves in the box and on the door?
Are there any nooks and crannies that will get dirty but are impossible to clean?
Does it have a closed deli tray drawer? amazing how many don't and thus how can you truly control the temp and humidity??
Is it easy to take the shelves and bins out to clean?

Another way to look at it, is to make a list of all the things you like and dislike about your current frig and use that to eliminate possible frigs.

Take a look at other threads and you will find lots of advice on which ones are worth the money or not..

And consider how good customer service is, too. It seems like they don't build things the way they used to...

Hello--

Understanding that you may not want to purchase from Sears and that they do not have every brand you may want to look at, the Sears website used to have a feature that allowed you to look at fridges by dimensions and type SxS, FD etc. At least it will give you a notion of what is out there that literally fits the bill.

Samsung makes a french door stainless steel model that has water inside, not through the door. Model RF266AE. We looked seriously at this model, but then decided to go with the bigger version, which only comes with a through the door dispenser. Samsung makes the GE Profile models, so they are identical, except for the nicer "assisted" opener on the freezer door that the Samsung includes. You won't find many fans of GE products around these forums... and I'm not one either. I'm going to have to put up with them, though, since my range, OTR micro, and dishwasher will be GE brands in my new house (this is what the builder puts in... I don't have a choice).
