ISO carpet cleaner recommendations

We need to get our carpets steam cleaned and I wondered if anyone had good experiences with any of the national chains (we tried Chem-Dry a few years ago and were not impressed at all!). Our cat has left some lovely stains after a recent bout of throwing up (hairball difficulties) and I'm interested in a company that can get stains out of a cream colored carpet (sigh!) as well as leave the carpets in good condition and clean. thanks.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't like Chem-Dry. They are my absolute favorite. No other company has gotten my carpets cleaner and brighter than they have. I've been using them for 20+ years when I realized I didn't want my babies crawling around on a rug with shampoo residue on it. I am also a Realtor and always use Chem-Dry if needed before Open Houses and for cleaning before a new Buyer moves in.

Did you let Chem-Dry know you weren't happy with the job? Maybe you had a bad operator. I'd think about trying them again but telling them first about your past disappointments.

There have been a few rare spots Chem-Dry and their spotting product didn't get out. Lately, I found Blue Magic in the automotive dept at Walmart. Magic it is! Cheap and easy to use too. One just shakes the can, spays the spot, wait 30 seconds and blot with a clean dry cloth. My neice even got old juice stains out of her carpet that no carpet cleaning service or product could.

It may be stupid but I think about carpet shampoo residue like hairspray...it seems to attact dirt and hold it. Since Chem-Dry is only using a concentrated version of carbonated water, it seems to me the carpets stay cleaner longer.

Regardless, I think I'd try Blue Magic on the kitty stains first and then get a service in. Good Luck with your carpets.

Thanks for the info' about Blue Magic. I'm going to try it. When the Chem Dry man came, I was not home. My husband let him leave after he completed the job with the carpet looking and feeling stiff. I should have done more research on cleaners following the chair cleaning and I should have complained to the company as well both times. Anyhow, that's why I'm interested in steam cleaning.

Well, I fired up the little machine and it removed all the light brown stains. I used the Pet Stains solution first. When I ran out of that I switched to the OxyGen2 solution. the only stain that wouldn't come out is the pink stain so I'm going to buy the Little Green solution and see if that works (previously we only got rid of the pink stains by having Stanley Steamer come in and clean the carpet). I'm glad I bought this cleaning machine every time I walk past where the other stains used to be.

Can you recommend a spot steam carpet cleaner?

Couldn't have a pet without my spot bot. Be sure and use the chemicals made for it and not the larger machines. The larger machines chemicals are thicker and could clog your spot bot. I tried to make my own Oxiclean solution to try and save money. Not good...not good at all. Went right back to the pre-made stuff. Definately worth the money all the way around.

I have the H3060, the very first one on the page I linked to above. Don't be shocked by the price though; I bought mine brand new for about $75 less than what Hoover advertises it for. I like it a lot. It comes with two brush block assemblies, one specifically for cleaning grout. Hoover also sells a special grout solution too. It works very well, and never "reuses" water, so you're always putting down fresh water and dirt is never spread around. I guess the only gripe I might have (and even then I understand the design decision by Hoover perfectly) is that it scrubs very lightly. With brushes spinning at a very high speed there is a balancing act of pushing too hard (which could damage wood or linoleum) or pushing just hard enough to clean tough spots. Hoover erred on the side of caution, so any ground in dirt, scuff marks, etc. still require a pre-scrub by hand to loosen them up. Otherwise, no complaints. Spills, normal dirt, etc. are all picked up very well and the floor left sparkling.

I live in a bi-level. Currently I have linoleum in my house entrance with carpet on the front entrance stairs leading to the livingroom and carpet in my livingroom, hallway and bedrooms. I want to replace all this flooring with either cork, bamboo or laminate. I've been doing some research about the pros and cons of all 3 and I'm no further ahead in making a decision. We are a family of 3 - no pets - however, our house is well "lived in" and subject to alot of wear & tear, plus I tend to be clumsy and drop and spill things on the floor :o) Based on these conditions and what areas of the house I want to put the flooring, I'd appreciate type of flooring recommendations. I'm particulary concerned about what I should use in the front entrance and on the stairs. I live in Canada on the Prairies with snow, etc. Thank you for your help.
