Subzero vs Miele 36" full fridge
Comments (3)We installed the Sub Zero 36" all freezer and all refrigerator (501 F and 501 R) in 1987. At that time they were the only counter depth units available. The freezer is still going strong after 26 years but we did replace the refrigerator last year. I'm not sure which model you're looking at but we went with the Sub Zero BI 36 R. We've been happy with their customer service that we didn't even bother to look at other manufacturers. We also paid a good bit less than the price on their web site which really helped. There have been numerous posts here about noisy refrigerators. I'm amazed at how quiet this unit is - and it's on a ceramic floor in a large kitchen....See MoreSub-Zero vs Miele vs ?
Comments (11)@msklh - The Viking was 10 and had been repaired several times including the freon, which I was told in retrospect is equivalent to open heart surgery on a fridge. Should have replaced it then. I went through an exhaustive search for the replacement & there's a long thread on this forum with lots of details, plus back and forth from some really knowledgeable folk. Here's the link http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2312992/refrigerator-again-perspective-please?n=76 My opening was 24" deep and the Viking was integrated. But I didn't have depth for SZ integrated. Long story short: Finalists were Miele & SZ. But we get frequent power outages here which Miele is built for and SZ is not. That was the deciding factor. Most decide on features like layout etc. Many like their Thermadors and that would have fit. But I didn't care for the interior quality and was unsure about service in my area. It also was nearly as much as Miele and I knew their quality & service. I personally loathe the taste of fridge water so water in the fridge -- apart from ice -- is the last thing I'd ever want. I do miss that slim full width drawer in my Viking as it gave me 3 big drawers vs 2 in the Miele. The little deli drawer is OK. It can be removed but I cram it full. The two big crisper drawers are very deep and hold a ton. But the big difference is the openness of the shelves. What I like best is the door racks which are super sturdy and hold all our drinks. The fridge is quiet (there are some faint compressor noises but my Vike was so noisy we could hear it upstairs), temperature is excellent. Freezer is excellent with 2 shelves I like a lot. Aesthetically, I wasn't mad for the look of the huge SZ grill which I would have had protruding from the cabinets with a standard install. Mieles vent is behind the freezer door on the bottom. That makes the compartment higher than the SZ's. The Miele lighting is outstanding. You can see everything even when the fridge is crowded. It was also about $800 less than the same style SZ here. Nice benefit since I had to pay for install. But either one is a good choice. When I compared them feature to feature it was a tough decision....See MoreMiele KWT 6322 vs Subzero 424 Wine Refrigerators
Comments (6)With a wine fridge, for me, there are 2 issues. First: 2 zones in the temperature control vs one. If you want to store very good whites and reds you may want that fine temp control. Check that on each unit. The other issue is the racking set up and capacity. Is capacity the same? Are the racks designed for maximum storage? Is the racking material material sturdy? What's the vertical space between racks? I like sparkling wine but those bottles don't fit in my wine fridge. They are too thick for the sliders to close so sparklers must be stored in the garage fridge -- f.ex. What's the maintenance on each? Does the compressor need to be vacuumed? Mine needs to be pulled out once a year so it can be cleaned from the back, which is a PITA. There may be a tipping point when you analyze. And be sure you have seen each unit in person so you know that you like the way the racks pull out etc....See MoreSubzero vs Thermador refrigerator/freezer columns
Comments (2)Thermador has been at it far longer than subzero so I normally recommend them (or miele or gaggenau which come out of the same factory). They have been very reliable and are well priced. The only instance where the subzero has an advantage is the install with regards to the hinge. If you are installing in a tight space, the hinge on a subzero opens within the width of the unit. So you can put it up against a wall or hinge to handle. In the therm/miele/gag units the hinge is articulating and opens wider than the body of the unit by about 2"...See Moreloves2cook4six
