Desperately need Tile Grout Color Advice

Hello, I'm having a dispute with my husband. We are having the tile redone and my husband would like to have the grout for the glass tile darker. He wants to add the existing cap and and thinner cap underneath. Should the grout be darker or should we keep it white? Here is a picture.

I think that is a personal preference. My personal preference is I like my grouts closer in color to the tile. But many people prefer that the grout stands out, I like it to blend more so I would chose darker.

According to the tile contractor it should be white. We want the glass to stand out not the grout so maybe going the darker route would be better. We've already had a disaster with how it was installed and want to avoid another disaster.

Bill, You have been so helpful. This is a true tile job that has been a disaster. First, the wrong tile was installed in February (after being told before it started). Second, the thinset was not removed from the first job and the floor cracked all underneath the tile laid again in March. The correction to the second job did not come until July. They could not fit us into their schedule. They did not use the grout requested by us, refused to put in the expansion joint when questioned and said it did not need one. Lastly, the grout dried completely uneven in color, not to mention being poorly laid out in the division of lines. A salesman came to look at the job today and said they would grout on top of the tile. Is that normal? I am so sick of this project!!! We have been without this second bath except for a sink since Februrary 3rd. Surely this can not be normal for a tile job. Strangely, they act like everything is normal. I feel like we need to get someone out to look at this job before we accept what has been done. However, it is apparent they are incapable of doing a normal tile job.

Bill V - thanks, I was hoping it was that simple. So, we lost half of our beautiful tile just for the sake of the wrong color thinset? That is pitiful. I'm sure they are going to try to make this our fault for not telling them what kind of thinset to use, but we're the layman. As a professional, shouldn't the tile setter have known to use white thinset for a translucent stone? The good news is that the remainder of the tile should work just fine for our master bedroom fireplace as long as they use the white thinset, right? Well, trying to find the silver lining, I guess all I can say is that the slate is a better choice material-wise for a woodburning fireplace & we can get the nice onyx look in the bedroom where we can really enjoy it. Melissa, pics would really help, including the dining room finish you've referred to. Personally, I'm a very visual person so it's difficult for me to picture in my mind's eye all the finishes and kitchen arrangement to which you've referred. "....What do you think needs to be done now? ...." I think you need to remove some grout and pop out a few of the tiles. I would think you have a bond breaker issue where the substrates' tile prep has failed or the thin-set has failed. Often large tiles are set with the wrong setting materials. you might discover a pre-mixed thinset like Mastic was used. This would of course be a bad idea and not the right choice for that tile size. Your builders could have used construction adhesive and cement board as tile prep - that would be wrong as well. Or maybe the thin-set was right but over watered and installed too thick. So many things could have been done wrong. Removing a few tiles should point out what the problem was. Do you know if the installer left room for expansion around the perimeter? If you want the tile to "Pop Out," use the white. I would use a grey to closer match the tile. Dealer's choice here...

Is the spacing between the tiles uniform? If it is, the white grout will be fine, if it is not, you may want grout that more closely matches the tile so the spacing is not as obvious.

I wouldn't use white anywhere in that installation, but that's just my personal preference.

Mock up some tile/grout samples using several of your ideas. Thats what I did and was so happy that I did not use white on my marble after seeing it in the sample.

I always like to match the grout color to the tile color.
Also the grout width is too wide in my opinion. Less grout, is better.

Thanks everyone for responding. We decided to go with a darker grout and smaller caps. Can't wait to see the finished product :)
