Slate and/or marble mosaic on a shower floor? Yes, you could use it...but honestly, there are some really nice looking porcelain faux-slates out there these days.

I'd give those a good look before you commit to a somewhat soft, somewhat porous material in a shower floor. I'd want to make sure that the slate is very tight-grained as well.

And lastly, I'd really like to see something like that installed over Kerdi or another membrane to minimize water penetration into the substrate.

I love natural stone. But I only like it in a shower. A potentially soft/porous natural stone in a wet area? Now I'm only luke-warm.

It can be done, but know there is a downside.

Slate has the reputation of shedding wafers, that's the way it was made over the centuries. The smaller the pieces the more likelihood it could shed especially if subjected to moisture and dry cycles repeatedly such as in a shower floor. I'm thinking it wouldn't be the best idea.:)

Bummer! I think this tile is so pretty and it matches the rectified porcelain wall tile I picked out at Porcelanosa. I bought up 200 square feet of the wall tile for $1.99 a square. It was a closeout.

It is beautiful, and with those specs, why can't you use that on the floor, too? Sounds like it's *perfect* for it. Just have it cut into 2" squares or something...? Then get a beautiful accent, whatever you want, or maybe just another contrast field tile, depending (see atsmith's masterpiece for use of 2 kinds of tile). A shower floor won't take more than at most maybe 20 sf unless you're doing something huge...and your walls won't take that much...I bet you can work something out.

Have you looked at slate-look porcelains? There's a link below to one from Casa Dolce Casa which looks very much like the slate one you'd wanted.

It comes in other colorways and sizes as well. We used a porcelain mosaic for our shower floor, and thus far, it's been bullet-proof (and looks good too).

I considered slate for a shower floor and decided against it. I recall that one or two people with slate shower floors commented about some type of whiteness staining the slate making it difficult to keep looking nice.

I agree it is great looking, but we ended up going with a porcelain tile that looked a lot like a stone called Lagos Azul (www.stonesource.com)

You are a tile god, or at least your reputation precedes you. It seems I have purchased too much wall tile. Should I use it for the floor all cut up? Am I asking too much of the tile contractor?

What if we smash it up with a hammer in the manner of the great Atoni Gaudi? Nuts?

Anything can be done. But some tile lends itself to being cut better than others.

If you take a simple glazed tile and cut it, the edge will show a thin glaze on top covering a bisque body. If there is a large contrast between the color of the glaze and the color of the body, it may not be the best tile to cut up into smaller pieces. Any flaws at the grout line can look messy.

If you get a through-body color, where the center of the tile is the same color as the top, then the cut edges of those look less jarring, color-wise. Those are easier to cut and install.

The shower I did in the "Kerdi Shower" thread didn't have single uncut tile in it.

So yes, on occasion a tile saw can get a good workout!

Or...it's time for you pack up those tiles and a hammer, and book a trip to Barcelona!

Wow! I have to show my hubby the kerdi thread. That is an amazing job on the shower. I wonder if my tile guy can do that.

Actually, I just got back from Barcelona, which is where I got the Gaudi ideas. If you love tile, you need to see Gaudi's houses. Heck, if you love art and architecture, they are astounding! The Iberia sale fare was only 400 r/t and the tapas were cheap and yummy. Since I am currently tile obsessed, I visited the flagship Porcelanosa store on Passeig de Gracia. It is three floors of amazing home design around the corner from Gaudi's Casa Battlo.

Just in case you didn't know what to make of my post, I just realized that I had no antecedent to "it" in my post at all...I meant that the wall tile was beautiful and could be used on the floor as well, not the slate.

We too have a shower and actually entire bathroom in which every tile has been not only cut but re-edged. It happens. Cutting a tile is not that big a thing.
