30-inch DF range: Wolf or DCS?

The title explains the decision we're trying to make. The DCS has some features we like a lot (5th burner, oven rack rollers) but we haven't been able to find a DCS dealer in central Massachusetts, despite calls to the (very unhelpful) help lines of Fisher Paykel. That creates two problems: we've been unable to see the DCS in person, and are a bit concerned about service.

Our priorities are: burner dynamic range (high highs and low lows); ease of cleaning; reliability. Comments from anyone who can speak from experience about either range would be most appreciated.

I'm in the Boston area and have had a 30" DCS AG self-cleaning range for over 5 years and I'm very pleased with it. I haven't needed service in quite a while but there are definitely servicers in the Boston area. I've always found the DCS help line very helpful - they're the ones who have provided me with the names of the local servicers. Here's their phone number which may not be the same as the F&P number - try calling them and see if they can let you know about service in your area.

By the way, is there an Expo near you - that's where I first learned about DCS and saw one in person (not operational though). There's one in Burlington MA.

If you go to the DCS web page and click on the where to buy tab, you can find dealers in your area - there definitely are some in central MA.

I would pick an all-gas range and electric wall oven. An all gas range is considerably less expensive than dual-fuel, and you would have the flexibility of two ovens & an infrared broiler (only available in a gas oven). You could use the gas oven as a warming oven, handy to the rangetop, or its extra large capacity for crowds. If you don't choose a range, then a rangetop will give you higher BTUs and large burner grids than a "cooktop", which has discreet burner or hob areas. I'd pick the GE Monogram 36" 6 burner gas rangetop. For an electric wall oven, I believe a GE Monogram convection gives good value for the price. Others may suggest good alternatives. We installed a 36" 6 burner DCS range because it was available in all gas while GE Monogram only has dual fuel. At the time, 3 years ago, DCS offered rolling oven racks, higher burner BTUs, and a simmer ring on all burners, while Wolf did not & was considerably more expensive. We're very happy with the DCS & would get it again. We also have an electric wall oven & love the flexibility.

I have a DCS all-gas self-cleaning 30" range and I love it. It's almost five years old now and works great. You're right about the burners - they all have high BTUs and the simmer is fantastic. The oven works great - it's fantastic for roasting meats and poultry and works fine for baking. I make souffles, cakes, cookies, popovers and muffins and everything comes out fine. I also really like the broiler - I get compliments on my steak all the time. I'm a little surprised that you had problems talking to their customer service - I haven't needed to call them in a while but when I did, they were very responsive. Since they were acquired by F&P, I believe the calls are initially answered by people in New Zealand but they've transferred me to the technicians in California when necessary. By the way, have you looked at the Capital Precision range. I don't know if the size would meet your needs but the company was founded by people who were originally at DCS.

Sorry, just took a look at this thread again and noticed your question...by the time I got to Miele, I had decided on induction, so I didn't give the Miele an actual test drive. I did give it a pretty thorough inspection at the Miele place, though, and thought it was a very sexy range -- and the performance seemed very similar to the Wolf dual fuel. I say that b/c the Miele also has the stacked burners, which I really liked, but the BTUs are higher than Wolf (which top out at around 16k, I believe -- Miele was closer to 20k or so -- I can't quite remember). The Miele ovens on the 48" range were very nice -- the smaller one is a speed oven, and the bigger one is a regular convection. The speed oven wasn't a big plus for me personally, since I really wanted a steam oven as a second oven, but there are people on this forum who love their speed ovens. One thing I really liked about the Miele oven, which Wolf doesn't have, is the burst of steam option, which is great for baking (you can program up to 3 bursts of steam for up to 6 min. each during cooking). I didn't care that much about the MasterChef options on Miele, but again, others love these. At any rate, the Miele seemed very similar to the Wolf, I liked the steam option on the oven better and liked the Miele burners better (also, if you're interested in a grill, theirs was excellent and seemed very similar to the Wolf, which I think is the best in the business). If I had stuck with a range, I would have been very tempted by the Miele.

Thanks. I was not able to get the DCS webpage to work for me in earlier attempts, but today it did. The first place listed is out of business and the second doesn't carry them, but now I have something to work from!

Thanks also for the phone number and the Expo idea.

BTW, does the self-cleaning feature on the AG work well? I'd consider AG if that were the case.

It works reasonably well. On my range there's a small area on the front bottom of the oven by the door that doesn't get hot enough to self-clean - that area has to be cleaned manually - once I realized that I'm careful to wipe that area up right after use if nescessary. The rest of the oven gets cleaned very well.

The other advantage of the AG model is the gas broiler which is really fantastic.

Just wanted to say I really wanted the Wolf AG but with so many recent problems with the Wolf I decided on the DCS AG manual clean. It was recently installed, our gas man said it was the first range in a long while he had installed that need no adjustments. The SS top is very easy to clean, 5 burners nice and I had my 8 qt pasta pot in the center with plenty of rm for two - 3qt on the sides. (didn't need to cook anything else, could but could easily use all 5) the oven roller racks are great. Good luck with your search and decision.

When I mentioned the problems with the Wolf I should have clarified it was with the AG.

I don't know how you define central MA. Hudson Appliance in Hudson MA is a good dealer. That is where I got my DCS. I got a 30" AG self clean.

Thanks, Paul -- very helpful. Unfortunately, Hudson Appliance doesn't have any on the floor, but they might be a good place to buy from if we go with DCS. I assume you're happy with your AG self-clean?

Hmm. THey *used* to have one on the floor. But it was one of the pre-F&P ones. Maybe they got rid of it and didn't replace.

So far I am happy. Its a learning experience for me since I never had gas before. I haven't done anything adventurous yet. I keep causing pots of water to boil over when I am first bringing them up to a boil. And I haven't tried the self clean cycle yet.

I really like having the continuous grates.
