crayon marks on carpet

We were moving a cabinet from my father's house to our house. We moved it across the carpet and a black mark was left about 6 inches long. We determined that it was a piece of black crayon that had been smashed under the cabinet and stuck. Does anyone know what to use to clean it? It is a brand new wool-poly blend.

The best way to remove wax/crayons from carpet is with an iron and brown paper bag, or craft paper. Set your iron to it's lowest setting (NO steam!). Put the brown paper bag/craft paper over the crayon mark and set the iron on top for a few seconds. The crayon will stick to the paper. Remove and replace with a clean piece of paper. Repeat until the crayon mark is fully removed. If you find the lowest setting on the iron is not sufficient to melt the crayon, increase the heat setting and try again.

Try a paper sack over top of the crayon and a warm iron. Iron over the sack, moving it to clean areas as the wax melts onto the paper. Once it's just the ink, work on the stain. I used this method for a candle and it worked perfectly (royal blue candle, beige carpet). I then steam cleaned the carpet. Should work well. If it doesn't call a carpet cleaning company, they may have an idea.

Back in college, we had rented a house where the prior tenants were serious "deadheads". The lyrics to just about every Grateful Dead song were written with marker on the bathroom and hallway walls. As part of a good deal on the rent, we agreed to take care of it for our landlord. So I primed with latex "stain blocking" primer. And I painted. And painted, and painted. Coat after coat after coat. It would look like it was covering, but the next day, those d*** lyrics would magically reappear -- it was like the spirit of Jerry Garcia himself was haunting our bathroom. After about 7 coats, I finally gave up and went crying to the guys at the hardware store. They gave me a quart of Kilz oil base and a disposable brush. One coat and those lyrics were gone gone gone for good. No more "driving my train high on cocaine" when I looked up while in the shower. Phew! So as much as you don't want to stink up the bedroom, there are some things that you just need to break out the big guns for. If you hadn't already painted over it, I would say that crayola has a good "how to clean our products off almost everything" website that has saved my butt (well, technically, my kids' butts) more than once. But since you've already covered it with layers of paint, I don't think you'll be able to clean it. So at this point, I'd return the valspar because it didn't do what it claimed, buy yourself a quart of regular old oil-based kilz and a disposable brush (or, if the area isn't too big and you can do it without making a mess, a can of kilz in spray paint form - that would be your cheapest option) and cover over the offending spots. As a tip to any NEW parents reading this: Make sure you use name brand such as Crayola. Their paints, crayons, etc wash off walls, furniture and clothing much more readily than other brans (Roseart is one of the WORST to get off walls and woodwork).

It should be fine, since you are only using low heat and no steam, plus the paper between the iron and carpet. If you really want to be sure, you could test it first on a small spot in the corner of a closet, where it would be less noticeable, in case it does any harm.

First, you should probably use an ice cube in a plastic bag on the crayon spot, and once it's good and cold, use a dull, or plastic knife to scrape off all the crayon that you can. Vacuum up the crayon bits you have loosened, and use the brown paper and warm iron to get the last bits up. Good luck!

clancyspad: You could also use folded paper towels under the brown paper bag to help protect the carpet, and soak up the crayon. A lot will depend on the thickness of your brown paper. I always used double grocery bags, with one inside the other.

I've also heard of others using a hair dryer, set to high heat, on the brown paper bag. I've never used this, as the iron and double bags always seemed to do the trick.

I bought some Goo Gone at the dollar store to remove some adhesive residue from the glass of a picture frame. In reading the label I noticed that it can be used on crayon and chewing gum. I tried it on both (dark green crayon on the wall and fossilized gum in an old carpet) and it performed miracles. It literally melted the crayon and gum away. And it smells wonderful. If you use it on your carpet you do need to wash it out with soapy water after doing the stain removal, but I'd recommend giving Goo Gone a try. I've seen it in grocery stores and Home Depot as well as Dollar Tree where I bought it.
