Cleaning Toto cast iron tub - what do you use?
Comments (9)Actually, it sounds like Toto's customer service was quite helpful when you called, they gave you two specific product names! Bon Ami and Soft Scrub are both extremely mild abrasives (about as abrasive as toothpaste) that won't dull the porcelain enamel surface. By "abrasive cleaners" they are referring to products like Comet or Ajax, which will scratch the living daylights out of that nice smooth porcelain finish. This dulls the surface and the microscopic scratches collect dirt, which leads to a dingy appearance. For routine bathroom cleaning I usually use Oxyclean, which is plenty sufficient for the whole room. The Mr. Clean Magic Erasers also work as well as Bon Ami (wonderful stuff, and very earth friendly) or Soft Scrub (Ecover makes a great nontoxic version) when there's soap scum build-up or a bathtub ring that needs dealing with. Plain old baking soda also makes an excellent extra-mild abrasive that doesn't scratch - make a paste with a little water and apply with a sponge....See MoreMy new 'cast iron' Toto tub sounds like a steel tub
Comments (4)When we installed our Toto cast iron tubs (1525's), DH "wrapped" as much insulation around them as he could, while the walls behind/around them were still open. Someone here mentioned doing that. We are very, very happy with our tubs, BTW. If we ever move/have to re-do bathrooms, we'd use Toto cast iron tubs again (maybe longer ones if space allows)....See MoreToto Cast Iron Tub May Be a Problem
Comments (3)I frustrated with the non slip bottoms they put on cast iron tubs today. Some feel like a grindstone (can't imagine sitting on that) and then Kohler uses that almost impossible to keep clean process. Could you tell me what kind of slip resistant surface Toto uses on thier CI tubs?...See Morecast iron or acrylic tub
Comments (30)OK, I know this thread is ancient but I just had to add my two cents worth for people who come along later as I did. The idea that cast iron retains heat longer than fiberglass or acrylic tub materials is simply a myth. Cast Iron, even with porcelain over it is a better CONDUCTOR of heat than any of the modern tub materials other than steel. Steel and cast iron will conduct heat at more or less the same rate with differences that would only matter in a lab. Cast Iron will transmit heat to the surrounding air and other materials faster than fiberglass or acrylic, which are both better insulators than cast iron. This is the exact opposite of retaining heat. Anybody who doubts this: Take a cast iron pan, fill it with hot water. Take a plastic pan of equal size and fill it with hot water of the same temperature. Put the pans side by side with a thermometer in them. Check them an hour later. I guarantee you the water in the cast iron pan has lost more heat and is colder because cast iron is much better able to radiate heat to the surrounding air than plastic. There is no way that any metal tub whether steel or cast iron is going to keep the water in it warmer than fiberglass or Acrylic will. Yes cast iron does radiate some of the heat from the water back to the bather above the water line, which some people like, but it does this because it's a better conductor of heat, not because it holds heat. The sole advantage of cast iron is, admittedly, much greater strength and if you want maximum strength steel is stronger still. I've demo'd multiple cast iron tubs into pieces with a sledge hammer. It shatters easily. Try that with steel....See Moretrec
