I feel your pain! We bought a new sectional sofa even though we work and are gone during the day, so there was no way to prevent our badly shedding dog from lying on it. I covered it up in the a.m. with an old sheet. When company was coming over, I'd remove the sheet. Otherwise, we had the sheet on for about ten years, until the dog's arthritis got bad and she couldn't jump on the sofa. After she died, we got a non-shedding, non-allergenic dog, a Wheaten terrier.

Daily brushing or shedding blade use (outside) will help. But only help. My dog doesn't get on the furniture thankfully. The hair is everywhere else, though. I use Endust on my broom to help keep it from wafting through the air when I sweep.

If you buy microfibre material the hair is at least easy to get off. Don't let the dog on the couch. My dogs aren't on my furniture, but the cats are!!

FYI . . cleaning tip that I could not believe, use the rubber dishwashing gloves, put them on, and "pet the couch"!! It pulls the hair right off of fabrics. just use short strokes and the hair piles up! I can "de-shed" my couch in seconds. Never will go back to "sticky rolls" again!

Pet hair on the furniture was exactly the reason we switched to leather. Clean up is a snap now!

Add olive oil to their dry food, and when you bathe them always use a good quality shampoo AND conditioner. Don't use the cheap stuff - it's loaded with perfumes and dries out their skin and makes them shed worse. The olive oil helps to keep them from shedding so much, and lessens the dander. Like you, I'm tired of cleaning up pet hair, but I couldn't imagine life without my pets!

Yes the rubber gloves work the best, and fastest.

OK, I'm gonna have to try the rubber gloves. But the next question is: how do you get all the hair off the rubber gloves?? If I wash it down the sink I'm gonna eventually have BIG plumbing bills. Do I call a plumber or a vet for THAT hairball?

If this just shifts the problem from one place to another, I'm not sure it accomplishes anything.

The pet hair falls right off the rubber glove. I usually do this when I have the vacuum out. I use the gloves and place the hairs on the floor and vacuum it right up. No problem. If you're not going to vacuum have a large plastic bag handy.

I use decorative microfleece throws on my furniture for my cats. The microfleece really holds the fur - keeps it from dispersing elsewhere, and they are easy to wash and air dry.
