Non toxic cleaning supplies?
Comments (37)Maybe you meant sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate (washing soda) isn't just a filler. It softens hard water, binding up the calcium and magnesium so that detergents are not inactivated by them. And it adjusts the pH to a level effective for cleaning. I may try Ecover just because I'm kind of compulsive about trying lots of cleaning products. But in real-world conditions of hard water that is not scalding hot, I'd expect better results from OxiClean. I get a 15-pound box of OxiClean at Costco for I think about $12. Ecover around $4-5/lb is a lot more expensive. I'd have to get equal cleaning power from 1/5 the amount by weight to break even, costwise....See MoreHelp! Bar Keepers friend not so friendly to SS
Comments (80)The warning label is actually pretty good. It nicely summarizes exactly what you need to know. The SDS is more detailed and fun to read, if you are into that kind of thing. But most consumers don't need that. I agree that the letters are small, and that can be problem. But there simply is so much information that they want to give and only relatively little space. If in doubt, you should assume that any cleaning supplies are potentially harmful. More often than not, that's probably true. If that isn't good enough and you really need to read everything, I have found my cell phone to be much more useful than a magnifying glass. Take a picture and then zoom in. Or even better, look at the picture on your computer screen. Then you can make all the letter really big....See Morewhat is the best frying pan??
Comments (3)The Demeyere 'Proline' is the best stainless steel skillet made. I agree with everything Gooster stated so well. There are of course many 'good' skillets out there. If you needed quick heat response then Matfer Bourgeat makes a great stainless lined copper frying pan, as does Falk or Mauviel M250. The Falk is available with stainless handles as an option. These are top tier but if you want the copper to look nice they'll need to be polished often. These are also heavy and expensive, even by Demeyere standards, For a couple thousand $$ you can get solid pure silver skillets. A company called Soy makes them- select your size and pay - https://www.etsy.com/listing/229225881/25mm-pure-solid-silver-999-frying-pan?ref=shop_home_feat_4 And depending on what you want it to do, bare cast iron is loved by a certain fan base. It's not as even or as quick to heat up, but it has some other pluses over stainless clad. The two biggest advantages are that it's much less sticky, especially for things like eggs, AND it's easier to clean and maintain IF you sear things that cause fats or oils to cook onto the surface. That's because it aids in the seasoning of the pan's cooking surface. And you want that patina, and you don't 'see' it, except that your pan slowly becomes darker and slicker. If you go that route, the older vintage cast iron is smoother and sometimes a little lighter. The Japanese make modern good quality cast iron as well. It is not anywhere as evenly heated along it's surface as a good stainless clad fry pan....See MoreHelp me ditch the drying rack!
Comments (58)I don't but good and/sharp knives in DW. Not good for steel and the blades can slice/damage the coating on the DW racks. We just swapped out an old (still running) fast DW for a modern, slow one. I tend to wash large bowls, cast iron, pots, and Le Creuset by hand and let air dry, hand dry, sometimes put them next to or onto the woodstove. After pans have drained even a bit, they are easy to quickly dry w a cotton towel. Sometimes I set them atop the stove if the oven is on. Pipied, those ss bowls won't dry very well in that position. IDEA: if they have loops or rings, temporarily hang them from under-counter cup hooks. You can set up a small fan or a ceramic heater on low. But really, buy a dozen quality cotton dish towels and bite the bullet. Play a mental game, or chat with your young helper for the five minutes or less in which you'll be drying. I can think of some Rube Goldberg systems if you really can't hand dry, but want that stuff of the counter.... 1. Hang each item from your clothes line after you've bought some steel line and marine snaps. 2. Have a custom made wooden rack made up with large castors. Place the pots, pans, bowls on this. Wheel it into a room where you've set up a huge industrial fan......See Morelindac
