Building a Home

Build progression display in home?

Not sure if this is the best place for this question but now that our home is complete, and my wife's birthday is coming up, I was thinking about putting together a nice framed build progression display in our den. Maybe one large frame with 3-4 pictures of the house in various stages, and then a few surrounding framed pictures of our family in the pictures at various times. We took pictures of our kids sitting in roughed in windows, me in the rafters running wires, etc. Does anyone have some displays they would like to share? Looking for some creative ideas.

Your wife may be different than me, but this wouldn't be my first preference with the photos.
I think a photo book of the adventure would be really fantastic! Not through the big box places, but Shutter fly has a very nice program where you upload your photos, it pops them in thepages, and you move them around and change the pages collage style, even to just a single photo. They are very nice, not expensive, and thoughtful because of the time you put into it.

We have already put together a scrap book of the build(via Mypublisher). This would be a much less detail. The idea I have (while it may very well be a bad one) is that these would be similar to a family photo collage but focusing around the home building process. Thanks for the feedback.

Two years, and we're still not through. We are first-time designers and owner/builders, doing some of the work ourselves and working with money from savings (but, the money ran out). The living area in the house is only 1,720 sq ft, but the rear-attached garage is 960 sq ft and the front porch is full width and the side porch is not exactly tiny. It's a large corner lot (large by this modest-neighborhood's standards), and is in North San Antonio, very close to all the conveniences. We looked FOREVER in order to find the "perfect" lot, and where we could park the motorhome in the backyard. We lived in the big motorhome during most of the construction (we had full RV hookups 6 months after we started framing). The major delays were due to the fact that I wanted everything done right, and insisted on doing a lot of it myself (I work slow). The house has 10 ft walls/ceilings and all windows and all doors (including garage doors) are 8 ft tall. All exterior is of NON-wood construction, and the idea is to reduce the maintenance. I also have to say that we've taken some time off, here and there, to go motorhoming and fishing. Right now, my wife and I are installing this vinyl fence on the side of the house. As we speak, I am fabricating a steel frame for the big 14 ft gate. I will attach fence panels to the steel gate in order to make it look like the rest of the fence. I will post another photo when we finish bricking the front steps and after we install the vinyl railings/ballustrades on the front porch. BTW you can make out the motorhome, by the tree where we've had many picnics :-)

Gosh everyone's progress pics are making me so anxious to dig!! We should be breaking ground next month and I can hardly wait. We have a LOT to do to prep. We bought ~10 acres in Central Ohio, most of which needs to be cleared. It was a foreclosed property, so it hasn't been taken care of in quite a while. Most of the brush was taller than me! We've gotten most of it cleared and are now working on our temporary house, which we will be living in while our house is being built. It's pretty rough, but because it was a foreclosure, one of the stipulations was that we had to make it our primary residence within 60 days. The other big thing is getting one of the barns down to make way for the construction driveway. This will be our first time owning a home and obviously our first time building. I read on another thread that you sold your condo and are currently renting while waiting for your build to begin. I hope you don't mind my asking why you sold your condo so early in the process Thankfully, we could easily cover two mortgages but that wasn't the reason. Our market in FL was hot last year and the year before and with the election etc. we felt it was better to sell when we knew the market was hot, rather than wait. Additionally in our downtown area, there is a tremendous amount of building going on. Seven new condos are going up around us and the general rule is people prefer new even though those familiar with our area, know that our building is one of the most desirable and well run in the city. Plus with all the new condo's going up, we think there's going to be a glut on the market. We also lucked out that we were able to rent one of the condos in our building that didn't sell, so moving was relatively easy.

We closed on our lot yesterday! Finally! To save time we started schematics while in escrow and our schematic design is in for design review with our DRC. If that goes well, our architects will start on permit-ready plans in January. Right now it feels like we'll never get to the fun part - building. Hopefully early next year.

I love the idea! :) My man did a similar thing for me, but focused on just the house. So each year, at the same time, he takes one picture of the house in the same spot, frames it and dates it. While right now it's just one pic of the house in tyvek, it's a super cute idea, and I love that each year we'll watch the house get siding, the garage go up, the lawn appear...and if we had children, I think it would be awesome if they suddenly appeared in the pictures too.

I say go for it. I can't help on the collage aspect, but welcome to pintrest. Someone has a diy collage you can steal!

Our Kitchenaid fridge had a little LCD screen you could put photos on with a USB for a slideshow. We had photos of our build playing on it during our housewarming. You could also use one of those slideshow photos frames for your build photos.

I think it's a great idea, but I would want it to be fairly small -- no bigger than one of those collage frames.
