I had an antiqu book business for a very short while, until I got tired of situations like that! But I read this when researching: fill the bottom of a canister large enough to hold the book with fresh coffee grounds. Put something on top of that for the book to sit on, so that the air can circulate around it. Wrap the book loosely in paper toweling. Close the thing up and let it sit there a few weeks. Other way a friend used is she set it in front of one of those "Sharper Image" catalog ionizer air purifiers for a couple weeks and it took the smell right out. All old books possibly contain bookmites etc., and I don't let any come into my library without first wrapping them tighting in plastic or foil (or putting in a freezer baggie) and keeping them in my freezer for at least several weeks. This is supposed to kill the bugs and any eggs. Also, get some tea tree oil at the natural food place, mix it in some water (it has a very strong sell) wet a rag with it, wring it out, and wipe down the book very thoroughly inside and outside of the covers. Of course lots and lots of sun is very good too though may not be good for the book if it is in falling apart condition.

Kitty litter. Put some inside and put the bag in a sealed container with kitty litter on the bottom. Linda C

We bought a house from heavy smokers who kept their house pretty clean. We thought we could get rid of the smoke smell by cleaning everything really well and airing the place out, either cleaning the window treatments or getting rid of them, either cleaning the carpets or worst case replacing them. Turns out we had to clean and air the home, scrub the heck out of everything, replace the nearly new carpet, throw out the window treatments, repaint all the walls and ceilings, and replace some of the drywall. Also, the smell of the cigarette smoke masked the musty odor of the home. Once we got rid of the cigarette smoke, we had to find the source of the other odors and fix those. I don't think I will ever, ever buy another house that doesn't smell fresh unless I have no other choice. Our neighbors bought a home from owners who had a cat who urinated on the floors. They wound up having to replace the subfloor. I think they said they'd never ever again buy a house that smelled of cat urine. I hope whatever you decide works for you!

Smoke is strange stuff. It will absorb into anything porous, just as if it were a liquid. If the paint on your walls was a fresh coat of good quality, the walls could be wiped & done. If it's an old coat of builders grade flat, they will absorb the smoke and should be re-painted, probably. ANY other soft goods in that room stand to carry the same properties like drapes, carpet, upholstery etc. Before I went the insurance claim route I might try an industrial cleaning company for their special product for such use. They are usually mix-with-water chemicals that in various concentrations can clean smoke damage from almost anything. Good Luck!
