Shower Door Help - Side panel or no? Bar or Pull?

Hello -

I've been spending more time on the kitchen forum during my whole house remodeling, but the bathroom questions are coming up. I've read through the many posting about frame-less shower doors but couldn't find help for these specific issues (lots of help on other questions though - thanks!#

GLASS

We have a 4x6 walk in shower in the Master Bathroom, and will be having a hinged door. Due to the chairrail my husband requested #so we could vary the tile pattern to avoid "boring" beige tile) we now have a challenge with the door swing.

Option A - Fixed panel with hinged door to tile - requires notching the chair rail and will not swing open as fully/stay open.

Option B - Fixed panel and the hinged door attached to a 6" side panel.

We'd prefer not to notch the tile (makes the wall tile pattern awkward outside the glass) but are concerned about the sturdiness of the side panel.

HARDWARE

Any thoughts about having a double towel bar as the "pull". All the pictures seem to show a pull and I can appreciate not wanting to "disrupt" the clear view provided by the glass but functionality kicks in at some point - we have no close point to have full shower bars. Just wondering if someone put in towel bars and regrets the look - hard to find pictures.

We did a shower that had a trim piece that stuck out beyond the tile profile (like a chair rail would), so I just stopped the trim short of where the door would attach and used normal tile in that section. If your wall continued on, you could start it up again after the door.

If you have a towel bar, it will hit the wall if the door is hinged on the wall. You'll have to do a handle in that case.

Have you talked with the glass installers? It seems that would be a good place to start. Also, the glass company I'm working with gave me a catalog to look at handles. Other parts of the catalog have all sorts of interesting pieces that are meant to be used in interesting scenarios like yours. There was a 90degree Polycarbonate Strike Jamb pieces which says it's 'designed to seal between the door and the fixed panel on a 90degree enclosure. Attach to the fixed panel on the strike side." My point is that I bet they have seen this situation before and can give you some options. I think you could do a thick piece between the tub and shower that extends a few inches beyond the tub. Then hinge the door to that piece. Then have a fixed piece of glass on the short side. The door and the short side close at a 90degree angle. But that's just an idea. I'm not a professional, nor have I actually done my own shower yet.

debsan & rjr220, Thanks for your kind words about my kitchen. I'll have to post a picture of the other side so you can see the corner cooktop and frig. Yes, I have natural cherry cabinets with no stain except the stain called natural. That picture was taken in October, after they were installed and I'm amazed how much the cabinets have darkened. Will have to check on undercabinet lights and get back to you. hokies, So did you use the designer's trick when installing your pulls? If so, how much did you adjust from the center and did you like the outcome? antss, Thanks for your input from the Europeans since the pulls orginated there! buehl, Thanks for the reminder that I will be viewing cabinets/ pulls from various angles so they'll look different depending on where I'm standing. I hadn't thought of that but you are absolutely right. My kitchen is at the end of a rectangular Great Room so I will often be looking straight into it.

Thank you everyone for sharing. It looks like there is not wrong or right way as looks as the pulls are placed consistently. All the kitchens are so beautiful! Breezy is the granite up a tiny bit everywhere are just the area away from the sink as I love the look! The verticle Marble is how many inches up on the wall? What CM is your gorgeous slab? I know you used BMW Simply White for the paint and it is beautiful with the Marble. I love all your choices. I wish I had so much light like you have in your kitchen. Badgergirl, your cabinets are beautiful also and the pulls looks so nice since they are consistently placed. Blather, I would place the pull on the top rail like the other cabinet doors. I love how your kitchen is coming along.

Placement of pulls on upper shaker-style doors? Help needed ASAP!

There is no one right answer to this. Our decision was influenced partly by me being short so we chose a placement that put them about as low on the door as would look nice. Our pull's "legs" (the part of the pull touching the cabinet - not sure what to call that so leg seems as good as anything) are round. We placed ours on uppers so that the bottom leg of the pull (i.e. the bottom part touching the door) was centered with respect to the bottom rail. On the lower cabinets with a door we did the same thing except with the top leg and rail instead of the bottom. The result is that the end of the pull is kind of centered on the diagonal running from the inner corner of the rail and stile to the outer corner of the door. Since your pull has a longer leg, that might make the bottom of the pull look a bit too close to the bottom of the door.so moving it a bit higher with the inner edge lined up with the inner edge of the rail as DCward suggests might be better.

KKperry, what did you decide to do? How does it look? I have a similar issue with my chair rail and my glass shower door. Maybe I ought to consult the glass company before the tile is finished to see what they think.

I used what is called a combo. On the outside it is a towel bar. on the inside it is a pull.
