Best way to clean exterior brick

Can anyone help? Our new kitchen is being built in an addition that is being built on the outside of our existing brick home, and the exterior brick wall will be exposed in the kitchen and dining area. The brick was once covered with ivy. A wire brush seems to work to get the residual ivy tendrils off, but now we need to clean the brick and mortar.

Unfortunately the contractor did not clean the brick as I suggested before enclosing the addition, so we're left to clean it now as an interior project...which means no power washing. We don't have flooring or drywall yet, so we can get messy, but I can't spray water anymore...so we need to do this a small section at a time to reduce the mess.

Any suggestions for what to use? I've heard both TSP and oven cleaner. Anyone have any experience on this one? Not so much a kitchen question, but you guys seem to have seen and done everything. Thanks!

Well, there is a product sold in pet stores called Poop-Off that is designed for use with domestic birds. I would soak paper towels in an ammonia and water solution, press them up against the poop areas and let them sit there for 1/2 or so. Them wipe off the poop with them.

Best way (if any) to clean soot?

What is the material the soot is on, metal or brick or bricklike (refractory)? Whatever it is first vacuum the area with a shop vac with a brush attachment so not to scratch the carbon into the brick material or scratch the metal. For metal get most off with soap and water. For the hard to remove carbon use Spray 9 cleaner. Try a small area to be sure it doesn't remove the paint, it shouldn't. If it does use a cleaner like Fantastic. For brick or refractory material use tri sodium phosphate solution diluted in water. It won't be pristine but will look cleaner than it is. Elbow grease is required also.

I use the foaming bathroom cleaner. (like Mr. Bubbles) I actually saw this on HG-TV show and it does work. I bought some cleaner last year at Lowe's and scrubbed and scrubbed above my fireplace and could not get rid of the soot. So back in the summer I saw them use this bathroom cleaner so I gave it a try. It was amazing. I actually just bought the store brand and it broke the soot down and it was just running down the brick. Pretty amazing. It didn't bother the brick at all.

Re. Murphy's Oil Soap: For polyeurethaned hardwood floors you should NOT use Murphy's Oil Soap. The company I use for screen-and-coat touch-ups specifically asked if I had used Murphy's because evidently if it has been used the screen-and-coat won't finish properly. They say to only use vinegar and warm water and a mop or cloth wrung until almost dry. I have no idea if this applies to engineered hardwoods. HTH.
