For about 6 or so years..Ever since I took an interest in Citrus.. I will tell you though, most of my plants did LOVE the extra humidity..Now that it is gone, the flowers on many of my citrus are just drying up, don't look as full and open anymore..Also my camellia flowers are fallen off at a faster pace. Oh well, they will have to get use to it..lol. As was said, they will adjust. I did some major reconstruction in that room, tearing down a wall and putting the skylight just this past fall, and saw no mold at all, thank goodness! I never saw it starting on the walls or anything like that in the past... It must be because of the extra condensation around that skylight now, since warm humid air does rise... Since the humidifier is off, there has been no condensation at all on any of the windows..The humidity level in that room was at 60 percent this am..Not bad for no humidifier I guess. I also have two floor water fountains in there. This morning I removed the couple of mold spots on the white wall within the skylight casing, and havn't seen any anywhere else.. I will admit, I enjoyed the extra humidity in there myself too. It was like walking into a tropical rain forest. No wonder my plants felt like they were in heaven. If my plants had brains, I would hate to think of what they would think of me now.. I hope that as long as it is still cool in there, without that extra humidity, that the spider mites will stay away. I really think they hated the cool and MOIST conditions.. I have seen not a one! I think I will put it on only when the reading drops below 50 like Mr_subjuntive suggested. Again, thank you for probably saving my home and possibly my life. Mike:-)

Your father is a smart man. Check the EPA site that explains mold. There are hundreds of thousands of varieties and many are black. Mold is not a problem to anyone unless they have allergies to it. Even the ones they considered dangerous - the stachtybotrys (sp?) and others are said to be of unknown danger. They don't know at what level ... or even if they are harmful. There is mold in the air you breathe ... in the soil in your houseplants in the soil around your home .... everywhere. This is a situation that has been greatly over blown by the media and by the contractors that have sprung up making big bucks off of people that have bought into the hype. A little bit of bleach in a spray bottle will take care of it. You might also want to take a look outside that wall to see if the ground around the wall there has settled and collects water. You may need to have Dad add a little fill and level the ground away from the wall to keep water out. Sometimes its a bad downspout or gutter adding moisture. Our local health department won't even go out to investigate mold anymore because they have determined its is not a health problem.

This whole thread is so much facepalm. First of all, neither bleach nor vinegar "kill" mold. They can inhibit its growth by providing an environment that is not conducive to spore reproduction, but they can't "kill" it. Secondly, you ALWAYS have mold spores everywhere all the time in your home. Always. If you have conditions for mold, mold will always grow 100% of the time. If you don't have conditions for mold, mold won't grow, no matter how many spores are around. The biggest lie of the mold remediation industry is that you can "clean" your home of mold spores and that will stop mold growth. As long as mold has not structurally compromised your sub floor, you can clean it up yourself and there is no reason to tear out the floor. Let everything dry out, get a bottle of concrobium from the hardware store. Concrobium can actually for REAL "kill" mold spores in wood by crushing them, and making the wood inhospitable to future mold growth. Apply it liberally to the areas with mold, let it thoroughly dry, vacuum up all surfaces in the the room, and you're done. After that, going forward, you won't have mold growth as long as the floor stays dry. If it stays dry, no mold. If it gets wet again in the future, you'll have mold again. This is always the way it will be whether you dump a $20 bottle of concrobium on it or pay a remediation company $10,000 to rip out your subfloor.
