Dust, dust, dust - Do air cleaners work?

I should dust everyday. We have a German Shepherd dog who is an important part of our family, and is in the house all of the time, except for play time, and potty breaks. We do not bath her as instructed by our vet, and she is clean and has no odor. I don't know if the dust is coming from her paws and our shoes or from somwthing else, but I do know it is very, very annoying. We are probably getting a lot of this in our lungs, also. I do cough sometimes, and I blame it on the dust because it is not viral.

Getting to my question - do air cleaners take dust out of a room? I am not so concerned with price, but I would like it to really work, and be as quiet as possible. I would prefer not buying filters all the time, and I don't mind washing or wiping off the collection device.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is there a better forum to ask these questions?

Consider having your ducts blown out. We did this and it was wonderful!

We do not have duct work. Our heating comes from electric in the ceiling. The air conditioner filter is cleaned when needed. We have a central vac which eliminates dust from the usual vacs. I don't know what else to try.

Part of the problem could be the heating vents. I had mine cleaned and the change in the dust in the house was incredible! I have 2 dogs and 2 cats so I know exactly what you mean. I also clean naturally and the only thing I can offer is to vacuum daily and get a feather duster or something similar that you can just sweep across the furniture and knick knacks daily.

Lily, huck toweling? Just googled it and hard to tell what it is... Can you enlighten me? About microfiber, honestly I cannot stand the way that stuff feels on my hands, it's similar to chalk on a blackboard and it snags on cuticles. I have to wear a pair of disposable latex gloves when using them -- which sort of defeats the purpose of using something re-useable, LOL. I just noticed yesterday that the horizontal part of my PT holder is covered with PT dust. It has been up in this house for a year. It's a very nice one from Ballard Designs and was up in my last house for 2-3 years and never got any dust on it at all. It's definitely little PT fibres.

It could be that the supply box is not sealed to the floor, or ceiling..depending on where the supply air is located. Do you have condensation on the grills? Using a mastic tape to seal this junction will keep dust/insulation particles from entering the home. And is something that you can do from inside the home by removing the grill & sealing the box to the cut in the ceiling (or floor) with a mastic tape. I use Hardcast mastic tape. Often what happens is that when the grill is installed that the screws pick the supply box up..and particles & unconditioned air enters @ this area. Go into your attic..if the supply is in the ceiling & feel around the supply box. If you feel a gap between the box & ceiling..there is the entry of this unconditioned air. An expensive HEPA purifier might be less than effective for dust generally in the house? I don't know either. But if a little background noise is not a problem how about a box fan with a generic furnace filter on intake side? lifting the grates and fitting inexpensive furnace filters beneath them? I don't think they would restrict the flow of gravity risen heat at all. Overkill, but might be an idea on a smaller scale if you have a shopvac. I once lived in a three story train depot in Savannah, GA. Turn of the century. We were getting it reconditioned. After the first month the dust was getting to everyone badly. I bought a Ridgid shop vac (i swear you can't kill those things), replaced the filter with a sturdy wire mesh colander, attached thirty ft of cheap 3" dryer vent hose to the exhaust. Put the hose out of any nearest window and plowed through the dust from top floor to bottom. Worked the charm. Of course, the "central heating" there was a ceiling hung gas furnace 12 ft above the first floor. No ductwork. household dust is an odd combination of things- and having a dog certainly increases the 'dead skin' component of it.

increasing the humidity in the room is the easiest way to cut down on airborne dust- it might also cure your cough (though if you're having any other breathing symptoms, or any swelling anywhere- get yourself checked for allergies. I'm an adult-onset dander, never USED to be allergic- but now the cat's not allowed in the bedrooms any more)

the ionic and HEPA filter air cleaners WILL take out airborne dust- one of my clients has the 'smarter' ones in his house that needed cleaning EVERY DAY for the first few months he had it, and then it started catching up with itself, and now they get cleaned once a week, and even the plants look healthier.

What's the smarter ones? I just sent back a Prozone, an ionic air purifier what had a horrible gas smell. The pollutants had to be vacuumed out of the floor, etc. to keep them from flying up later.
