a stupid low budget radiant floor question

i will have a 6" (by about 22' long) heating duct running below the center of a tiled hall to our front entry (this will get used seldom). could i remove the duct and pan across the joists like a cold air return to warm the tiles above? in a friend's home, they have a duct running down the center of the bathroom under the floor and the vinyl stays nice and warm. i could increase the takeoff size to 7" or 8" and line the sides of the joists with sheet metal if necessary. i could also drill a series of 3" holes in the subfloor to help the heat transfer to the cement backer board above. is there any reason this would not work? thanx for your comments.
