crema marfil tile question

I am using white carerra marble in two of our bathrooms and I love it. That has gone in already. I am trying to decide if we should use crema marfil or carerra for my husband's bath. We ended up getting carerra samples but not the crema. We are somewhat delayed in terms of the job needing to get done. I can order a crema sample but it will slow us down more. So I am trying to decide if we should go with the one we know or if crema is a good choice too. my husband doesn't know either. We looked at lots of photos of crema together and we kind of like it but were worried it has too much of a pink undertone. does it? or is it purely beige? Is it a good choice for a man's bathroom? And what about carerra-- is that too feminine looking for man's bath? we know we want marble and have narrowed it down to these but we don't quite know what crema marfil looks like and would appreciate any descriptions.

White with gray veining type marble is classic and is neither masculine nor feminine. If you want to make a statement and identify a bathroom as masculine, IMO you're being too timid with crema marfil. I'd suggest something like Michelangelo marble with a dark wood vanity, such as the picture below.

If you want to stay with white-with-gray-veining type marble but want to distinguish the other baths from your husband's, why not go with statuary marble? Carrara is more foggy while statuary (statuario) has sharply defined veining.

Or, you could do carrara or statuary for the above the floor surfaces (vanity top, shower) and a darker marble or tile for the floor:

The crema marfil we have has a peach- pink tone. We have it in our powder room with grey toned walls (BM Coastal Fog) and grey tile floor and bamboo vanity and think it looks really nice but might be a bit feminine for a man's bathroom. It is pretty though.

There are different grades of Crema Marfil. The ones I'm familiar with are the select, which has less veining and a cleaner more uniform look, and the standard which has more veining and a bit more color variation. I haven't seen one though with drastic color variations. Did you specify the quality of crema marfil in your contract or store? If it's much different from what you saw in the store I would contact them. You really should check the tile before it goes up ;-(. Are there many dark ones? If not maybe they can be replaced. Hope you can resolve it. Can you post a photo?

Thanks for the pics Live Wire Oak! Looks beautiful! Do you happen to know the name of the tile you used? I would think it's either Corsican Creme or Palais Taupe?? I went to a local tile shop that carries Crossville porcelain to check it out this weekend but the salesperson was not sure which specific color would be considered Crema Marfil and the store did not have samples of the styles we thought it might be, based on the brochure pics. Part of the problem is that I currently live in Western NY but my project is in FL so the typical tile types and colors used up here are quite different from what is used in FL. I really like the idea of using real stone, rather than porcelain, but I know logically that the porcelain will be much easier to maintain and will cost a lot less - particularly since we have 2500 sq ft to cover!

Hi Colorado, We used bone color grout. I am not sure about the ones at HD or Lowes --- I didn't know they had Crema Marfil! I know on the travertine floor tiles, my tile guy said to watch out for the "pitting" meaning the holes on some of the tiles. If the quality isn't great, the pitting can go all the way through. I am not sure what to look for in Crema Marfil, other than they told me all of the tiles in my boxes were not the exact same thickness, so they had to pick through a bit to find more consistent ones. Lastly, I did look at several local tile shops and their crema marfil was quite a bit darker and more pink. So, from my perspective, if it looks like a good color, is pretty consistent depth and size-wise and you can get is asap, go for it and post pics when you are done! Can't wait to see it!

Just a word on HD. Their tile is inexpensive, often imported from China where imperfect pieces of stone are cobbled together into tile. Tile that would fail inspection at a reputable supplier is regularly sold through HD. You may not realize the horror until it is time to install it. What HD is great at is providing an inexpensive option, and taking things back. YOU MUST INSPECT EACH INDIVIDUAL TILE IN EACH BOX. My best advice to you if you go this route is to order extra boxes of tile, then sit at HD in front of the customer service desk, open each box, remove defective tiles, and replace them with acceptable tiles from other boxes. When you have enough full boxes of inspected acceptable tile, return the rest. Good luck!

We used honed crema marfil for the vanity and the tile in our recently redone master bath. I don't find it pink-y at all. Here's an in-progress picture from before we had the shower glass installed.

The vanity looks very similar to the floor. I think it is a great neutral, and you could make the room look more "masculine" with lighting fixtures or other accessories.

I'd caution about using a dark marble like the first example from DreamingoftheUP's post--those tend to show etching much more easily than lighter marbles.
