Help, I need rec on good vacuums
Comments (9)I am not sure why you are not using your Central vac on the rug. I can understand if you only have a suction only rug nozzle, but a power nozzle would do well. If you have the electric power nozzle, make sure that it is running properly. Check the belt and make sure the the brushroll is spinning while going over the rug. Make sure the bristles have not worn down so much that they are not effective at cleaning the carpet. I would not suggest getting a new unit if you are only going to be there for a few years and money is an issue. A regular vacuum cleaner can be taken with you. There are different levels of people with allergies and how much reaction they have. Personally, I have some allergies, but only require a thoroughly cleaned environment and a vacuum that filters well. I do not need the super duper tremendous filtration vacuum cleaner. There are others who must have the best filtering. If you have carpeting and floors, you probably want a canister with power nozzle. If your child's allergies are terrible, look into a vacuum cleaner with a sealed system. This insures that any air goes through filters and does not escape through cracks before leaving the vacuum cleaner. I do not know your cleaning routine, but you should make sure that you really keep the dust down. Dust often and vacuum everything. That means vacuuming the rugs, floors, furniture drapes, walls, etc. The walls do not have to be done every time you vacuum, but they do need to be done occasionally. Vacuum your mattress once a month. It is very easy to do. Don't put off vacuuming, because you do not see dirt. Dust is there, because dustmites are there(unseen). There is no need to remove carpeting, just vacuum more often. I love having carpeting. I do not want to be dusting floors daily; chasing dust across the floors. A Miele vacuum cleaner, with a power nozzle, would work for you. I just do not care for their expensive bags. They have come out with a new and improved bag, decreased the number per package and raised the price. A better idea, for the customer, would be to give them a choice. Remember, earlier I said that people have different levels of allergies. Take a look at Tacony's Riccar and Simplicity brands. They offer some canisters that have a sealed system like the Riccar Pristine or the Simplicity Verve. Go into the vac shop and take them for a test drive. Do not pay attention to the website prices, because they are MSRP. A good vac shop should have a better price. Cost of bags and filters are cheaper than Miele. Another brand would be SEBO, but are expensive also. I would suggest that if you look for a vacuum, take your child with you. See how the child reacts after the vacuum is turned on. You cold do this if you test the Kenmore line. Another cheaper vacuum would be the Hoover S3670. It does have the high filtration "HEPA" bags and filter, but it may not work for your child. It does filter well, but may be a problem if any dust escapes. Dysons filter well, but the problem is when it has to be emptied. You would have to make sure the dirt bin is emptied outdoors. I do not care for the performance of many of the models on rugs except the DC17 and DC28 uprights. Take your time when looking for a good vacuum cleaner. Comments (31)jamrock; With your situation, I would suggest that you purchase a canister vacuum cleaner. You have a lot of hard flooring to vacuum. You say that you have area rugs. If they are room sized and thick, I probably would suggest a canister with a power nozzle. If it is something like an oriental rug, you could do fine with a turbo brush attached to the end of a suction only canister. I do not know what size home you have, but the small canister vacuum cleaners, like the Simplicity Jill and Riccar Sunburst have bags which may fill up quickly if you have a lot of dirt to pick up. Not every Tacony(Riccar & Simplicity) canister vacuum cleaner is made in the USA. The Simplicity Jill(Riccar Sunburst) is made in China. I would suggest that if you like this canister, but do not want to spend the money, I can suggest the same vacuum cleaner under a different brand. With the cost of it, you could purchase three of them. Recently, Big Lots was selling the Oreck Quest refurbished canister @$99. That is a "so-so" price, but Oreck's regular retail price is too high for what you are getting. Bissell also markets a small canister with an electric power nozzle, which could fit your needs. It is called the CleanAlong. Look at canister/canister with power nozzles under the Riccar/Simplicity nameplate, for small to large canisters. Also, take a look at Miele's more affordable S2 series or the higher priced S6, then the TOL S5 series. Each series will have what you need. BTW, what vacuum cleaner are you using now? Are you happy with it?...See Moresebo vs. miele vacuum question
Comments (39)After purchasing a Dyson DC17 "Absolute Asthma and Allergy" vacuum and returning it a week later because all I did was sneeze, cough and wheeze during and after its use, I decided to buy a Miele a few days ago. I was also replacing a top-of-the-line, year-old Sears Progressive canister, that spit out more dust than it took in (further proven by a particle scanner)-and although it worked beautifully, smelled terrible and made me cough and sneeze. This is how I decided on the proper Miele model: First, I reminded myself that albeit expensive, the model that I chose was not a life or death decision. Second, I put into priority order the features that were most important to me. For my intense dust mite allergies and asthma, I needed the most intensive filtration system. A close second on my list was how well the machine worked for my home's flooring (mostly hardwood, a few inexpensive area rugs, and two small fully carpeted spare rooms), followed by quality/longevity, and finally, convenience. I did web research, of course, then visited a few Miele retailers. Various salespeople narrowed it down to the Callisto, and so did I. However, the store where I was most comfortable purchasing the Miele did not have the Callisto in stock. So, I went to the next model up (the "Gemini") which they did have, and the only difference is the color, the buttons next to the rotary dial light up, and it has an overheat light. This model comes standard with the smaller 217 turbo head and the parquet floor brush. If the 217 power head is used on Oriental carpets, I would think that the suction power on the vacuum itself could be turned down to a more minimal level, and it shouldn't harm the rugs...just my opinion. I have no problem pushing the smaller power head on my medium-density carpets (and area rugs), and I believe it was the right-sized head for my home's flooring. As for the highest models in the S5 series, (Aquarius and Capricorn, I believe), they have electronic "radio controlled" features, where the lower models in the series do not- they have the rotary dial instead. Primarily, the radio controlled features allow the suction level to the increased or decreased on the hose's handle itself, rather than bending down to change it on the vacuum's body. Also, as you go up in the S5 series, Miele includes the ergonomic handle (which the "Gemini" has, and it is comfortable). I love convenient, electronic touch controls, but besides making the vacuums more expensive, one of the shop owners strongly advised me against getting these electronic models. I imagine they would be more prone to breakdowns, and much more expensive to repair. Another poster was absolutely correct- some of the parts (HEPA filters, heads, etc.) are interchangeable across the Miele models. One can always start more basic and add to their machines- but electronic might not be the best way to go in the long run. As an aside, you will see little, if any, information about the "Gemini" model on the web (and the same for one other in the series, I believe), because Miele forbids these models to be sold or even DISCUSSED on the web. I can't even begin to imagine why. Another note, I talked my dealer into one hundred dollars off the retail price. It took some doing, but I was firm. This is another reason that I didn't mind stepping up to the unit I purchased. From research to purchase of my Miele took two days. I vacuumed on and off for over an hour yesterday and did not sneeze or cough ONCE. I did other cleaning in my bedroom also, but this is the FIRST time that I did not blow my nose at least 5 times upon waking. PLEASE steer clear of Dyson's hype about being allergy and asthma "friendly-" THEY ARE NOT. All of the repair people with whom I spoke cringed at the Dyson name. One referred to Dyson as "that junk." I can't vouch for Sebo or any of the other high end vacuums out there. All I can say is that I am absolutely amazed by the Miele- for both its function, quality, and for being a TRUE asthma and allergy machine. I am sorry for the length of this post, but I wanted to help others out there....See Morehelp me choose a vacuum?
Comments (36)I have a rainbow that is around 20 years old. It does not smell. If you are lucky enough to have a vac that actually lasts several years, you should have it professionally serviced/cleaned, if you cannot clean it yourself. Not only will you not have a problem with smelling, it's just like anything else - a car, a sewing machine, etc. and taking care of it will reward you. But, even though my rainbow is great and works well on hard or carpeted floor, with having all hard floors, I wanted something lighter and easier (not a canister, not tons of attachments, etc.) and bought a Dirt Devil 360° Reach Pro Bagless Stick Vacuum. It's kind of like a vacuum/dust mop combined. I use it most of the time and pull the Rainbow out for a deeper clean and when I want to use the attachments, etc....See Morebookert
