hood recommendations: small house, big stove

I am in the decision stage of a kitchen renovation and need to get a hood to vent the bluestar 30" RNB that I'm going to get. I've lurked for a good while, read a ton of stuff on this and other sites, and unfortunately there are so many brands and models that finding specific info isn't easy.

My house is small (1000 sq. ft) and space is at a premium, so I'm concerned with a couple of things:

1. getting something that I can put a cabinet above, i.e. not taking up the whole wall if possible, and

2. noise. The entire lot that my house sits on is 16x36. The whole downstairs is basically one room, LR/DR/kitchen. I currently have one of the Broan Allure III hoods over my crappy old stove, and on lower settings it's really quiet.

I'm looking at a 600 CFM hood, generally speaking. It's going directly through a wall to outside. I don't have room to go wider.

Models I'm looking at:

1. Vent-a-hood, either the PRH9 9" undercabinet hood, or possibly the CW line--although I'm not sure I can actually get what I want in that model.

2. Thermador PHH30DS, which has the additional advantage of being vented directly out the back instead of the top, which saves space in the cabinet above.

3. Best K210A 30" hood.

4. (sorry one more): the AirPRO AP238 30"

my questions are:

1. VAH - ok none, these have been discussed extensively on here

2. Thermador: how loud is this thing really? I think my parents have a thermador hood and it's pretty rattly and noisy even on a low setting.

3. Best: the only internal blower that comes with it is 500 CFM. I'm not overly concerned by that lack of power, although maybe I should be? But has anyone installed one of these? Does it vent directly out the back, or out the top and turn? It appears you can do a direct back vent, which would be great. On the other hand, that 500 CFM isn't much more than the 430 that my current hood does on boost -- and it's the same company after all..

4. AirPRO - only eurokitchen sells this one -- does anyone know the brand? it seems like just what I'm looking for, except for the top-venting aspect of things.

Any thoughts by anyone with these models would be greatly appreciated.

The AirPro 'looks' much like the Kobe CH 191. I think many people have one of the Kobe's.

We have a small home too - 600 square feet - and have an open layout. We elected to give up a bit of cabinet space in the kitchen and installed a 27" deep wall hood over our Lacanche range. I am happy we did so every time I do a smoky stir fry and all of the smoke and odor is captured by the hood and blown outdoors. Good ventilation is especially important in a small living space.

OP's can create a mess dumping their trash to get other's reactions. Sometimes it's intentional and sometimes it's a slip of the index finger. It happens all the time though hopefully this thread wasn't intentional (say it aint so!). It does bring to mind something a dear friend sent to me the other day. Hope you all don't mind... it is a bit philosophical... but since getting it I'm looking at life like a "trash truck" so just wanted to share and sorry if it's inappropriately to deep .....especially before morning coffee!!! ;) One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off from my hotel for the airport. Suddenly a black car raced out of a parking space right in front of us. My driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around, waved his finger and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy....I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Trash Truck.' He explained that many people are like Trash trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let trash trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right...then say a prayer for the trash trucks.'

Recommendation for small compact pellet stove

If you're looking a really compact stove, about the smallest one out there, and it's the one I use is the Thelin Gnome. At only 16" in diameter, it's ideal in my small sunroom. This is much small than anything else out there. Believe me, I looked hard. I have the ivory enamel with 24K gold trim, it's beautiful, and it fits ideally into the light colors in my sunroom. Now, it's a top loader, and contrary to what heard on this site concerning top loaders, I've had no problems what so ever with it. It has battery backup, and will float charge the battery when not in use. It also will control the auger speed with an external thermostat if desired. Two negatives: Due to its compact size, there is no ash pan. You must vacuum the burn chamber every couple of days. This is not a problem for me as the stove is used only a few days a week if we're in the sunroom, and not as a primary heat source. Secondly, and one that annoys me is due to the proximity of the fire to the door, the glass ashes over quickly regardless of the pellets used, and by the end of a 12 hour burn period only a yellow glow can be seen from the window. Not that the flame is attractive to look at anyway. All pellet stoves burn ike a blast furnace, but it's still nice to see the fire. Here is a link that might be useful: Thelin Stoves

Actually, in my opinion, I think a 36" stove space would hurt re-sale more than a 30" space, just because far fewer people really want a 36"er. Maybe it's the norm in Beverly Hills, but not in the houses I see. The 36" fan might not be a bad idea - just to open things up a bit up above. As far as the lower cabinets go, I think it makes things easier if there is at least a small counter on either side of stove to place things on. If you put a 36" hood up above, you might end up with the same open feel as if you had the whole thing re-done. Maybe draw the scenarios out on several pages to see if you can a feel for the difference. And remember, it takes a big Tom to fill up a 36" oven!

LL I am not directing this AT you in any way. Just some thing I have noticed in many of my friends. They complain their houses are too small. But they have say 6 sets of dishes for when company comes holidays whatever. OK I am guilty I have two sets of dishes or put together sets and nothing matches but goes together as a set or I choose to use it that way. Then they have decorations for every holiday imaginable and need places to store this stuff. But when the holiday happens they just go out and buy new stuff to store. Or if they are like me I do not even celebrate holidays so the stuff I had just sat in my storage areas.No more all stuff gone. Some times people buy so much stuff to give them the feeling of a life style they would like to have but never do it in reality. I was guilty of this too. No more. This is how I can live in a smaller house. And we spent many many years in much smaller houses.8 years in two houses at 800 SQ FT and 864 SQ FT, Another 4 years in an 1130 SQ FT. So this house is actually large for us. But there again I have my glass room just for that and I LOVE that. So does my husband because I no longer have glass projects all over the house. We have long ago given up having the "guest room". We have a room where some one can sleep should they want to but if it is not good enough for them they can go 10 miles to the motel.I use it as my sewing and reading or napping away room if I need one. I actually even used it as my office the other day when I needed quiet to work on city books. Versatile room. I really used to think bigger is better. I am so glad I am no longer of that mind set. I look around our living room dining room areas open to each other and we could easily seat 12 people here. If we needed so sit at tables I could do it. The area I am speaking of is 26 all the way across, double wide, by 11 on one side and say 15 on the other side. NO it would not be a perfect setting but I am sure every one would have just as much fun. But you need to build what you feel you need to live comfortably. No one can make up your mind for you. You have your needs. We all live differently.

wow, velodoug, a hood deeper than the range itself? hm.... i'd have to get it way up on the wall then, since i'm 6'3", which means i'd lose more cabinets...

thanks for the info on the kobe, alexr. those look nice. the CH122 model looks like it would fit the bill nicely in my kitchen, especially with the ducting options they offer. of course there are no dealers in my area, though, so i can't see/hear them in person...

now that it's significantly later, i figured i'd follow up -- i did get the kobe CH122. and it's pretty quiet, especially on the lowest setting, although it does get louder quicker than my old broan did.

and it seems to do a nice job. the controls are pretty much insane though. you push the button on the right to move the indicator to the left, and vice versa. when you power it off it stays on for 30 seconds. when you turn the power on, the fan doesn't come on until you choose a speed, and when you do it starts on the second-lowest setting each time. who designed this?

following up myself, if gardenweb will let me -- only two days later, and the left fan has developed a rattle when it's on the second-highest or highest setting. it sounds like it's slightly off balance or something, and when it starts to spin fast it starts to wobble. doesn't happen on the lowest two settings.

i'm going to get in touch with kobe and see what they have to say.

were you able to vent it out the way you wanted and put a cabinet above it?

sorry to be so late following up -- yep it has a direct vent out the back.

kobe hasn't responded to an email to customer service; i'm going to call them tomorrow. it's strange, on the 'low' setting it has this kind of weird whistling noise. on the medium and high settings is when the rattling/wobbling starts. i'm thinking the left impeller is just a little imbalanced or something.
