Contractor raised price 50% from original bid

Hello, I am in a terrible situation. A couple years ago we were ready to build (then the market crashed) and held off until this year. Our builder quoted us an original price as an estimate, now after getting "real" bids I guess, the price went up 50%! How is that possible? We feel totally mislead. We haven't gotten any other bids since 2 years ago, because we went with the one we felt most comfortable with. We've been working with him for months and I feel terrible. I believe we need to get other quotes asap. The situation is being this is a small community and don't want to make enemies. We just feel so had!

Is this normal to go up so much? Granted, we added an extra powder room, but I don't see how this would cost an extra $70,000. This is crazy. I feel like he lowballed us just to get the job. Anyone care to give advice or experience? I don't know what to do.

Also, I should add he is charging a percentage of the job so it's not a fixed price.
