Transition from carpet to tile?

I've also posted this on the kitchens forum. DH just laid tile in our masterbath area. The rest of the room has carpet, what kind of transition do we use when it meets the tile. The rest of the house has those gawdy gold metal pieces, which I hate. Please does anyone know if there are other options?

You should be able to find a stone threshold at HomeDepot. They come in neutral colors and about 42 inches long, 2 inches wide. Cut and install just like tile. Tile stores have them too.

We have stone or marble threshholds transitioning from all of the tiled bathrooms into the carpeted bedrooms. As posted above they come in a couple of different lengths, can be cut and installed like tile.

It doesn't. You run a tack strip in front of the installed threshold, and stretch the carpet to the tack strip. Another possibility would be to "turn" or "tuck" and tack it (basically making a "sideways hem") right to the edge of the tile. One other way would be to use an "insert" strip. It's a channel strip with a tack edge that you stretch the carpet to, and then there's a vinyl "T" shaped insert that pops into the channel, and caps over the edges of the carpet and tile. ANY of those will work, as well as using a wood threshold instead of marble. My preference, though, would be for the marble threshold. But I'm kinda biased. :-)

Sure, you can replace the existing tile and do the carpeted areas if you want to deal with the mess and expense. It's not at all an undoable proposition. It's commonly done. If you want to break it up and put tile where the carpet currently is, it's better to have a coordinating color but not a "matchy" color. If you do something too close to what exists, it looks like you tried to match and missed. It also works to use decorative listellos or different sizes of the new tile to create a pattern that separates the two areas.

You can do one of two things, if you don't want that strip. First, you can trun and tack the carpet at the edge of the tile with no transition (I don't care for doing this without having atleast a metal "L" strip to protect the edge of the tile) or, as you suggest, use a marble threshold, and butt both finishes up to either side of it.

Many thanks :) - This is our basement. My daughter is moving back home after 6 years in college (have never experienced what an "empty nest" feels like - LOL ) - We are fixing up the basement for her - She is afraid that all tiles would be very cold. The entire basement has carpet for the last 24 years but the water came in through the windows during the last big storm so now we try to replace the "potentially can get wet" area with titles (about 1/5 of the entire basement). We try to make it look artistic .. hence the curve comes in the picture. " Because it's a berber carpet you may want to consider a vinyl snap in. " Will go to the local professional flooring store(s) and see if they have this. "The best bet would probably be to find a carpet workshop, cut the curve in your carpet, bring it to a pro and have them bind the edge. Install the pieces of tack strip right next to the tile, run the pad up to it and tack the carpet. You might even want to do the carpet first, considering how hard it could be to get it stretched perfectly to the right spot. Then tape the edge and cover the carpet while the tile is installed and grouted." Great suggestion - I will look into this. Any advices on the grout width and any other ideas with this curve thing are greatly appreciated.

There are many transitional moulding types but another avenue if you want the look of carpet to tile w/ no transition moulding is to have a z-bar strip wher the carpet is rolled over and attached to the z and bumps up to the tile. Clean transition and look.

Corian-like material is what I've typically used. Big boxes and flooring stores carry it. It is easy to install and can be cut with a power miter saw. It usually has one lip with a beveled edge. If you don't want the beveled edged due to the heights between floors, simply turn the piece upside down and use the flat surface as the top instead.

If you use a stone threshold, HD and Lowes usually only have one or two colors. Our (major) tile supplier had four colors. Our tile guy had one specially made to match our light colored cork floor to transition to the hall tile. The color matches almost exactly.

A threshold is at an exterior door to stop weather penetration. A saddle is at an interior door to provide a larger door undercut for area rug clearance. A strip between two flooring materials is called a reducer strip wherever it occurs.

The number of possibilities for the location and the difference between the two materials makes the question impossible to answer without making wild guesses

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. We just finished the tile this weekend. The area between the tile & carpet is about the same height, but there is a gap between where the tile starts and where the carpet ends. I really like the idea of the metal that pulls the carpet so that there is hardly anything showing, but the tile place just told us to use one of those metal strips.

Any floor covering outfit that has or contracts out to carpet installers carry the z-bar strips but you should have it done by a carpet/floor covering sub as they will stretch the carpet, roll it over and tuck and trim so it will be seamless. It shouldn't cost too much for a pro to do this.
