Comfort height toilets for people under 6' tall--yay or nay?
Comments (25)There's some variance as to what's considered "comfort height" even within a single manufacturer. I find 17-1/2"h ADA height doesn't allow my heels to reach the ground - very uncomfortable - but 16-1/2" felt perfect. I chose a mid-grade Gerber compact-elongated commode (16-3/8" h) over their higher-grade model (17" h) in large part because that seemingly-trifling added 5/8" would have made it too tall for comfort. The traditional low-height isn't good for my back. Won't call it "regular height" anymore since comfort-height toilets now account for over 50% of the US market....See MoreComfort height or shorter toilet for kid's bath?
Comments (7)We put all comfort height toilets in our new build. Here is the thought process we went through: 1. young children very quickly grow through the needing a step stool stage so another 6 months is nothing in their young lives; 2. once you get old or your knees go bad you are old or have bad knees for a very long time; 3. just to make sure we sat on a variety of comfort heights in plumbing show rooms to confirm our decision. It was a no brainer for DH who is well over 6' tall and does have a bad knee. I thought it would be okay for me since I'm 5'5" and everything I test sat seemed okay. This past weekend we started moving into the new build so I reality sat the new toilets. My feet barely touch the floor when I use them, a different experience than when I test sat. I'm trying to figure out where I went wrong. Maybe it's because we got cushy soft close seats that give an extra 1/2" to the height of the toilets that I feel this is a bit different than I expected. But, DH is very happy and I guess at some point I can change out the toilet seats or get a step stool for my old age....See Morecomfort height toilets
Comments (15)An inch can make a surprising amount of difference in the height of a chair, a toilet, a counter, a sink if you are not very tall to begin with. Having your feet dangling even a half or quarter inch just plain sucks. People are proportioned differently though - someone who's 5'2" who has longer legs is probably going to be more comfortable on a higher toilet (or chair) than someone with a long torso and short legs. (Thanks Dad, for passing on the gorilla build.) That's why I say to give the comfort height the sit test before buying. I was dumb and wore my usual thick-soled clogs, didn't think to take them off, when I was testing toilets at the showroom, so I was falsely 1 1/2" longer in the leg than I really am and thus thought it was OK. However, when I'm in my normal bare feet, it's not. I've had the comfort height Whitney in my master bath for ten months and I still haven't "adapted" to it, I'm still annoyed by it. I especially notice it if something didn't agree with me and I have to sorta hang out there for a while if ya know what I mean - it's not much fun to have your legs and feet go to sleep while you're on the can! I'll put a grab bar in the powder room at the new house so that the tall folks with bad knees can hoist themselves up off the regular height toilet, but I'm going to make MY house comfortable for ME....See MoreToilet - comfort height or not? Comments (3)Standard height is better, especially for your bowel health. That may sound goofy, but it is true. Even standard height is too tall. There is a lot of research that shows a high incidence of diverticulitis in the U.S. is probably due to the fact that our toilets are so high. By not crouching down enough, a certain muscle that needs to relax can't....so to put it indelicately.....we all work much too hard to poop. In most countries toilets are much lower so you "squat" and can correctly relax. Okay. So enough about that lol. You can look into it more yourself if you want to....See MoreRelated Professionals
