Emergency help! My new pocket door doesn't reach the floor!!
Comments (6)I'm sorry but I can't post any pictures at this point. But I spoke to my contractor about this, and he feels that the stud along the floor is necessary to stabilize the door pocket. He didn't realize that the floor under the brown protective paper is my final floor. I guess he forgot. It is very thin Amtico tile, and there will be no threshold between the two rooms of this girls' bathroom. But there will be a threshold where the bathroom flooring meets the carpet, which will make the bottom edge of the door less conspicuous. This morning his carpenter changed the 2 by 4 to a 1 by 4 which brings the door down to 1" higher than the floor. This is acceptable to me, so if anyone should ever want to put ceramic tile down, there is plenty of clearance. My contractor likes to have the base underneath the track in order to nail the drywall and the baseboard down securely into a thick piece of wood. Since our slab constantly shifts, the more stability, the better. He also said that it is helpful that the door most used (which will be the door to the toilet/tub room) is further stabilized by being in a wall which is bounded by two cabinets, a sink cabinet on one side and a tall linen cabinet on the other side. Thank you for your replies!...See MoreDress up my cabinets - pulls: knobs or pulls, mixture?
Comments (7)I haven't chosen any of the hardware yet, so I am open to suggestions. But these are pretty cheapo 1980's cabinets, not as nice as any posted here :) The first picture posted is very nice, but those shaker cabinets have more to them than ours. I don't want a very modern look, I like it in other people's kitchens but it's not what fits in my house. Here's the kitchen shortly after we moved in - the paint job the PO did on the cabinets is horrible and needs to be stripped and re-done. The countertops are now concrete, the dishwasher is a new white one, and I'm putting in white subway tile backsplash... so lots of white I love a bright kitchen. Our home is decorated in traditional-transitional style....See MoreDouble pocket doors - New Wall
Comments (5)Thank you for the info! I've actually changed my plans and will use 5/8 drywall instead. Also, I'm a bit green so I didn't know about the slab/prehung meaning when it came to pocket doors. Due to this, I'll purchase two 1 3/8in slab french doors. Currently debating if I want to go the MDF route or not since $$$. The contractor will be supplying the wall studs, baseboards, quarter rounds and door casing. For the door jambs, do I have to purchase ones there are specific for double pocket doors? Perhaps I'll ask the contractor if he can cut them himself. Yes, the kits include the rolling hardware. Comments (11)I have edge/finger pulls. We had some that were damaged at first and needed to be replaced which is proving a challenge to get them flush now as we didn’t route them (however the installer did a great job without routing and it wasn’t rubbing when he did it). However, to answer the 2 pull issue and the user friendliness issue: we only have 1 even for the large drawers that hold pots, pans, kitchen aid stand mixer, blender, etc. Installer told me if you put two, you will most likely only use one and after prolonged use like that the drawers will become off balance. Using the edge pulls hasn’t been annoying or difficult in any way. Even my very young child and my older parents, who were concerned about joint pain, have been totally fine using these. Other people pointed out to me that maybe exposed edges would catch on my clothes but it doesn’t extend past the counter so my clothes don’t actually ever get close enough. On another note, I opted out of routing in case I ever wanted to change the style and not have that edge ruined….my husband later pointed out to me that changing the type of handles on our drawers would probably be unlikely for us….which I imagine is the case for most people. Once those handles are out of style, my whole kitchen will probably be out of style lol Good luck...See Moreenduring
