New Bathroom addition, curbless shower

I have been lurking on this site and found so many helpful ideas. We added on a bath for my father in law, the intent was for a roll in shower so we could assist with his bathing while he was in a shower chair. I actually found someone to do the shower with Kerdi, not an easy task in my country setting. My contractor had never heard of it, and I'm sure he was sold after a review by my tile guy. I'd never have learned of it if not for this forum. The benfits of self education must never be doubted.

I always love pictures, so hope someone can appreciate these. It turned out rather eclectic, slightly old farmhouse was my intent with some modern flair.

I love it! I love mixing colors/finishes...you've done a wonderful job...I'd love to know the size of your vanit, and most importantly the dimensions of the shower????

The vanity is just about 60", I love the space...
Looking at doing a master bath remodel, and would hate to have two sinks in that space.

The showers inside dimensions are 55 inches on the 2 long walls, 26 inches on the two shorter walls, with the opening 33 .5 inches. We did this for a roll in seated bath chair, which fit perfectly, and I think would work great for bathing assisted shower.
Unfortunately my father in law passed away, so we never did get to use the shower for its intended use.

I would be concerned enough to ask him for more details as to why he gave you that guidance. Can he explain his thought process, or provide building codes for your areas that would demonstrate his reasoning. Repost with what he says; then if his advice turns out to not be right you probably need to work with someone else. that being said, curbless showers are still pretty new so if this is a contractor you like and trust and has other good experience, then you might still go with him. My contractor is my stepbrother and I knew he would do an excellent job, as he had done alot of work on my Mom's house and the quality was excellent. Plus, he would have heard about it every Xmas, Thanksgiving, etc if he messed up the job. But, curbless was new to him...still I had confidence that he could learn how to do them and do a good job...and he did.

Desertsteph, that's an interesting idea about a second door directly from the master bedroom. One hangup might be the fact that our upstairs only has a seven foot ceiling height throughout (very standard for our vintage bungalow). Right where the back wall of the unfinished bedroom is it starts sloping down into the attic space. I don't think we would have the headspace for a door on the east side of the new gable, and we would have to widen the gable quite a bit to put a door where the attic door is planned and have it enter the bathroom. But I'll look at a carefully and make sure there isn't a way to squeeze it in. The changing tables say they are 37" tall, but I think that's to the top of the (removeable) rails, so the actual top may be 34" or 35". KMCG, I hadn't thought of kitchen cabinets as vanities. They are certainly easier to find used or discounted than bath vanities. Great price on the pieces you found! I'll keep my eyes out if we decide on a large single vanity or the changing tables don't work out. Hollysprings, I respect your ability to think outside the box. However, we really like our house as it is, other than the bathroom situation. It will only take a few LVL beams to support the gable on the loadbearing walls below; cantilevering adds nothing but a little length to those beams. I can't see how a much larger shed roof dormer would cost less or be simpler. Maybe I'm not understanding the situation, but it seems as though reframing the entire back side of the house, reroofing, exterior sheathing and siding, subfloor and flooring, all would be significantly more in quantity than what we are currently planning.

There is currently enough room to access the internal plumbing of the toilet but I am glad you brought this up as we are thinking about having a taller toilet installed as I was told it is better for the elderly or someone with mobility issues. If we do that can we still have the banjo? If not we are going to put a grab bar by the toilet so hopefully that would be sufficient. Sophie, our bathroom designer reccommended a curbless shower base that he uses often and he said it would work in our space. Yes, we plan on having a wide entry door. I do agree it would be preferable for this bath to be bigger. The shower will also have a bench that will fold back when not in use and shower controls you can use while seated along with a grab bar. My husband's parents are getting older but fortunately at present no one needs these modifications but it just seems wise for these to be in place.

Looks like bullnose on an outside corner? Tough to say what would structurally stress an area like that. A shower rod? Good news, it's on the edge of the installation. Removal and repair would not be difficult. And the location minimizes the effective compromising of any waterproofing membrane that might be underneath. Often times cracking of tile occurs on joints. Joints in framing. When new framing settles, or where new framing meets old. Differential movement within the wall. Near the top corner of an exterior window, etc.

I love the colors! The pulls, the color tiles and the wood color go so well together, you've done a great job! I love the beadboard too, it's making me think twice about tile wainscote and expense. Thanks for sharing!

Such a pretty space! I love the tall storage cab next to the vanity, I wish I could have fit that into my space, but instead I'll have to store a lot of stuff in the linen closet outside the bathroom in the hallway. I am having an open shower too, so I was excited to see yours.

Gorgeous colors you picked out, it looks cheerful and yummy, the apple green paint set off with all that white and the rose botanical prints to add some cottage chic.

VERY NICE. I am sorry your FIL did not get a chance to enjoy the lovely bathroom.

Very wonderful mix of greens and browns...love how they all work together so intelligently. I had been looking at the pictures, thinking "what a thoughtful, comforting, *uplifting* space--it's one of the best bathrooms, accessible or not, I've ever seen." I'm so very sorry to hear that your FIL never got to enjoy it. I'm sure that your work will help many others in their quest to combine accessibility with beauty, which will be an increasingly important issue in the coming years.

Wow, thanks for the compliment flyleft. I know you are quite active on this board, so I am very honored. I spent hours looking for the pieces of the puzzle, so it is great to see it put together. Now, I will spend hours again with my master bath, but that won't be for awhile.

Looks great! We are planning to use the same toilet in our master bath remodel, and I think also the same lights over the mirror, so it's nice to see how they fit in a real bathroom as opposed to just a picture of them alone.
