snow cleaning a antique hooked rug?
Comments (3)Cleaning with snow used to be a good way to clean rugs, but snow today is not that clean, and in some areas of the country is actually acidic. It's better to turn the rug face down and smack it all over with a dry scrub brush (use a white sheet under the rug). This gets out all loose dirt that is at the bottom of the loops. Then vacuum (low suction). Then mix up a bowl of suds (I used to use Ivory Snow, but don't know if they still make that) and use ONLY the suds, not the liquid, to scrub onto the top. Rinse (by wiping) thoroughly, and dry flat; vacuum again when dry. Of course this only works if your rug is color-fast and won't bleed all over the place. I have also used a commercial rug cleaning kit, but it wasn't any better, just different. Would it be better to clean the rug in the summer or fall? Maybe it would dry faster....See MoreCleaning/deodorizing and oriental rug
Comments (24)DH lived in Turkey for a couple of his military years and began collecting carpets then. He said that in sunny CA and in Turkey they often took them outside and hosed them down, but as you pointed out the weather would prevent that. We've done that only in doggie emergencies, but most often our wonderful carpet cleaner cleaned the orientals too, when necessary. I've taken one to be mended and they cleaned it there, but recently DH became acquainted with a rug dealer who had a couple of our rugs cleaned and I'm quite unhappy with the texture difference. Somehow they became softer and as a result tend to move when you walk on them. I'm not sure what the process was, but I suggest that you make certain that they won't alter the texture when the clean off all of that dirt. FWIW, I love the new bedroom color and the rug in the space!...See MoreCurtains for (formal) Dining Room with colorful Persian Rug
Comments (41)sergeantcuff, eastautumn, and ingrid, I love all of your rooms. Persian rugs make a room, IMO. Since my budget is very limited I decorate around the most commonly found colors in them-- the more unusual colors are out of my reach. Thankfully, I am a huge fan of red anyway. My rugs in my LR (I needed 2 since it's a long, narrow room) and DR are all old and at least slightly worn. I'd love to know what the rugs have seen over all these years in their different homes. sergeantcuff, I think I would only change the lace if you don't feel they are "you" or you are simply tired of them. If you are looking for custom, consider https://bestfabricstore.com/ I bought some nice linen fabric from them and wish I had had used the workroom too... but I am doing it myself to save money. (Now I just need a huge chunk of uninterrupted time.) The prices are very reasonable, even lined, for basic curtains. eastautumn, your stained trim is so pretty. My home also has (dark) stained trim but it's not "beefy" so I don't like it at all. It provides just enough color to be annoying to work with without adding any real value... but it would be a pain to get rid of....See MoreHelp determine where my persian or oriental rug was made?
