Garage door size
Comments (1)It'll just look a little funny with the top panel stuck behind the header. It will look like a short section on top....See MoreGarage size
Comments (7)Maybe do a double door and a single door (for 3 stalls total) and then park in the middle of the double door to effectively do what you have drawn. I agree that having storage / wall space for cabinets, ability to open your car doors freely, able to easily walk around the cars is a nice to have - but I also wouldn't limit your entry to 2 stalls - having at least the availability of the 3rd stall will help in resale. And heck - it's easier to aim for the center of the big door. ;-) Doing 3 doors would effectively limit how you used the garage and force the cars closer together....See MoreGarage Size Question / Help
Comments (20)I think that this garage height differential to the main floor is an often overlooked detail even in custom homebuilding. Even in my first build, we had more steps into the house than I would have wanted. That appears to have been a function of not wanting to dig the foundation for the main house lower ($$$) for the basement or crawlspace, since the garage is a slab. So I need up with 4 steps into the house and had to take some valuable real estate for stairs AND a landing at the top (which I think you need for anything over 2 steps...). And I've seen instances with FAR more. So that garage on paper is rarely an accurate reflection of the "as built" site interpretation.......See MoreGarage door sizes
Comments (3)You didn't exactly specify, but it sure sounds like an existing garage you'd like to modify. There is much more involved to widening an existing garage door than you might think. A new header, cutting the foundation walls and portion of slab, pouring new slab, are the walls combatting shear for the structure, the width of the driveway, etc. A 20' door is offered for a residential stamped panel, but 18' is the more common oversized width chosen. What is critical is the amount of space adjacent to the cars, not so much the space in between (you may walk by them both to get outside, access shelves, whatever many times a day vs getting out of 1 of the cars 2 or 4 times a day). Consider that a typical space in a parking lot is 9' wide....See Morebooboo60
