I have a whole house water softner What kind of miele dishwasher?

I have a whole house water softner what kind of miele dishwasher should I get? Yesterday I talked to my applaiance guy and he told me not too get a miele with a water softner and I also talked to a mieles customer service and they told me the same that I would have to get the Diamonte. When I checked out the new Diamonte on line I see they have a water softner so I called the customer service again and the woman said that I could get any one that all the installer has to do is bypass the water softner.

You can get any Miele dishwasher. There is a method to turn off the softner if you don't need it. You can review the user manuals for Miele products on their website. Buy the machine that fits your needs.

Thank-you homepro01 I will check it out, Today the lady from Mieles customer service said you could do that. And yesterday when I ask the applaiance guy and the guy from mieles customer service they didnt know that.

I thought I would give a dishwasher update... - We decided on a self-install. My husband (and I) decided to do away with the hardwired set up that we had with our useless GE Profile and install a GFCI receptacle in the adjoining undersink cabinet. Plugged it in as was intended. Looks and works professionally. - We swapped out the shut off valves under the sink for newer/better ones because the hot water one began leaking with all the new activity under the sink. No more leaks. - Attaching the hoses was nothing at all, because we had already had a professional installation on our last DW. - Leveling and screwing in the dishwasher was a breeze. Very easy to do on the Miele. Total cost of install including new shut off valves and GFCI receptacle- $35. No paying top dollar for bad installers, no damage to anything, no waiting for installation, etc. MIELE OFFICIALLY (as of about 2 years ago I was informed by Miele) NO LONGER GIVES THE EXTRA ONE YR WARRANTY FOR CERTIFIED INSTALLATION. I will take the year to decide on the extended warranty. I doubt we'll get it. I decided to use Finish Quantam tabs and will use neither salt nor rinse aid. If Miele suggests putting in some salt, then I'll do it. I RAN MY FIRST (waaaaay long) CYCLE last night! Woke up this morning to CLEAN dishes. Imagine that! No white spots all over the silverware. No rewashing at least 5 or 6 items- or the entire load (often by hand!!). No tiny ground up particles stuck all over every piece. No having to manually align the top plastic spray arm "tube" to the back wall of the dishwasher...and on and on. I am elated. Everything was dry except for some small plastic items that had overturned!! How I love that silverware rack...I did miss the ability to glance at the top of the DW to see how much time was left without opening it, as on the GE. It seems I have to open the Miele in order for the readout to come on...or am I doing something wrong? Also, even though the detergent dispenser was dry, my Quantam tab barely made it into the bottom of the tub. Nothing was in the way of it dropping. It had stuck mostly out of the way of the water, but I caught that in the first part of the cycle because I kept checking for problems. Any tips on that? I didn't have much luck with these tabs in my other DW either. A note on Miele service: So far, corporate office (Princeton, NJ) has impeccable service. As per a supervisor, they are shipping me a new handle free of charge because the included overly large and bulky handle clashed with the fingerprint-free stainless panel- and with my other appliances. It took one phone call from me. The supervisor wants to make sure that I'm happy with the DW and has already called me twice. And for $1100, I got the G5575SCVi that INCLUDED the SS panel and the handle. From what I gather from the web, the going price seems to be $1699 BEFORE adding on a few hundred dollars more for the panel and handle! Guess we did get a good deal. So far I am thrilled...not only with the quality of the dishwasher itself, but with Miele as a company; especially after living in DW hell for over two years...LOL. I wouldn't have been able to make the DW decisions that I did without all of the input! Thank you all!!

If you have a whole house softener, you likely have soft water, i.e., zero hardness. You could end up with etching of your glassware over time, like I did. To prevent it with my new kitchen, I had the plumber run UN-softened,COLD water lines to my Miele DW and let the DW soften the water to about 5-6 grains or hardness, which I'm told is ideal for washing dishes in very hot water and with today's DW detergents. Otherwise, you should not add any Miele salts to the DW, and you should run your clear glasses in a seperate, shorter glassware cycle, which if connected to cold water, will be at a lower temp which will help control etching. You need to focus on which model(s) have the wash features and racking options that fit your needs or lifestyle. DOn't get hung up on trying to find one without the built in water softener, they can always be turned off. N.B. some people find that their whole house softener produces too soft water for good washing. That can cause etched glassware too. Some will end up with a water bypass to the DW and using the built in softener on the Miele.

Start out with the default setting (3?), and see if you get good results; eg., no spotting, no rinse aid residue (soapy taste on your dishes and glasses), drying ability, etc. You can play with the rinse aid setting if results aren't to your liking (adjust it up or down until you get the desired results). At one point Miele service had increased the setting on ours, finding that some of his customers felt the dishes came out drier, however, we felt it left our glasses tasting soapy so adjusted the setting back to the default. While troubleshooting an issue last year, he suggested trying a lower rinse aid setting (given the rinse aid in the tablet, though we tend to use the Miele tablets cut in half). We ended up adjusting it back up to the default again, as our glassware was too spotty with the lower setting. We always use salt in our machine (Somat or Miele). I think the tech had set our DW to soften the water when it reaches 6 grains of hardness or above. We have moderately hard water, and only need to add salt about once a year or so.

We have water softener.The kind where the guy comes out once a month and changes the tank. We have had the Miele Optima for about 3 years and it works great. I just dont add the salt or whatever into the built in softener in the Meile. Dishes come out great!!

I had my Miele Excella DW bypass our whole house softener and had it connected to the COLD water supply.

Why? Long story short, TOO soft water and/or too HOT water can permanently etch your glassware. I learned this the hard way.

The Miele DW softener supposedly reduces your water's hardness to about 5 grains of hardness, which is supposed to be optimal for use with today's DW detergents. A whole house softener will reduce it to zero grains of hardness. The detergents are too harsh in zero hardness and permanently etch glassware.

Glassware is supposed to be washed in less hot water than a normal household water heater sends in the hot water supply. Therefore, I let my DW heat the wash water to the proper temp for each wash cycle setting. I wash my glasses in a seperate cycle setting "Crystal/China".

I have two DW, so this is my luxury and so far it is saving my glassware, including crystal wine glasses and my "good" china!

Having to heat the wash water causes my DW cycles to run a bit longer, but my dishes are being washed as optimally as Miele technology knows how to do!

smarge: i'm getting two DWs as well: the excella and the optima. do both your DWs bypass the whole-house softener?

we have well water but i don't think it's soft. should i do the same and have them connect to cold water only? TIA!

I don't find that my Miele works well with a whole house water softener. Even with the softener in the dishwasher disabled and every other recommended step taken the dishwasher still etches all of my glassware. I would not recommend a Miele dishwasher with a whole house softener.

kateskouros - in my opinion, I'd recommend bypassing the softener and using the machines' softeners. I can't remember if the Optima has an internal softener, but if it doesn't, you can use Glass Magic with it for glassware (and be sure to run the Crystal/China cycle, which runs at a lower temp and is a shorter wash than Regular and many of the other heavy cleaning cycles!)

In general, I think well water tends to be high in minerals, which are what makes water "hard".

FWIW, I also by-passed our water softener for my Instant Hot/Chilled water spout at one of my sinks. I run a small water line for that into an Everpure filter, which also filters the un-softened water for my freezer's ice-maker. Drinking "hard" water is healthy; your body needs the minerals.

My husband rolled his eyes and our plumber thinks I'm a complete wacko, but in my opinion the extra plumbing was well worth the trouble and expense in the long run.

and yes, I recommend connecting them to a cold water supply instead of the hot. Your electric bills may go up, but you'll save your glassware from damage.

(washing in a dw will eventually damage all glassware, but doing it in cooler, not completely soft water with a very small amount of DW detergent - like 1 Tablespoon max - will slow that process drastically!)

Smarge -Great information - thanks for going into such detail.

We do not have a water softener so the built-in one is a plus for us. THe cold water is a great suggestion. I don't wash my wine glasses in the DW but I have some nice glassware that has deteriorated over time. Nice to know of a way to help preserve it longer.

Thanks for all the info, I talked to a meile tech person on Friday he had to come for my washer and dryer and I asked him and he said that you can bypass the water softner and I also asked him what was the best model and he said the Laperla. I know its the top of the line, I was looking at the Optima or the Excella, Is it worth it?
