We just removed a tub/shower in the master bath and put a 5' shower in its place. It makes our small bathroom feel much bigger and much nicer to shower in. We also pulled one out of the hall bath, put in a soaking tub with shower capability but since it is just the two of us opted to not put up a shower curtain rod. When we have overnight guests we can put up a tension rod.
I think it is a great idea and we do not regret having done it. One thing we thought about is how easy/difficult getting in and out of a tub/shower would be when we got older. As long as we had a total redo going we had really nice grab bars installed. Much easier and cheaper to install them now rather than later.

For me, I'd think that as long as you have another bath in the house, you should be OK. I'm a bath lover, but I still wouldn't mind not having a bath in the master (now I don't even have a master bath at all, so maybe I'm not a good reference!), as long as there was a tub somewhere. For me what's important is a "clean" tub, aka one that's not used daily to shower, because it dampers my spirit if I have to clean it beforehand! We have a 2 bed/2 bath home, our basement bath will have a nice glass shower, and our main floor, a nice soaking tub, no shower option.

We just finished a master suite addition and did not include a tub. I agree that as long as there is a tub in the house, you'll be fine with just a shower in the master.

Thanks all...been watching too many 'sell this house' shows and thought there might be a problem without a tub in the master. sounds like i should go with my first choice of shower only after all!

So you don't mind water splashing all over the floor outside the shower when you don't have guests over? I don't get it.

Even if there wasn't a shower and it was tub-only, I've always liked having a closable door or curtain just to keep the air warm and draft-free in the tub area.

That bathroom shower will ONLY be used by a guest. We will be using the shower in our master bath.

The room the tub is in is only 5' x 8' so it stays plenty warm when you are soaking in the tub. The heater warms the room up very quickly and keeps it that way.

kellied--I thought I would share a shower curtain design solution that my designer came up with yesterday. I am in your situation. Master bath without a tub and soaking tub in the hall bath which has to be used as a shower as long as my teenagers are still here (another year or so) and after that when they are home for summer/vacation and when guests come. I don't want to enclose the tub but because it is a short tub (the Kohler Greek), I need coverage. My designer suggested a ceiling track for the curtain (like a hospital track). They make them flexible so you can have them cover multiple sides of the tub. So the track is barely visible. Here's the good part--we are designing a pocket wall next to the tub. About a foot or so of the pocket will house the curtain that can be pushed into it. The rest can be used as a recessed closet. So the curtain will be barely visible and I don't have to keep putting something up/taking it down. Maybe you could do something similar. Hope this helps.

We have done some beautiful tile work around the tub that we didn't want to cover up. Also, this bathroom is only 5' x 8' so we need every edge we can get to make it feel bigger.
