The 7 Series by Follett is really the cheapest version out there of what you are looking for. While the demand for specialty in-home ice makers is high the truth is that most people aren't prepared to pay the amount that they actually cost. Pretty much all major brands of ice machine manufacturers make ice and water dispensers (i.e. Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Ice-O-Matic, etc.) If you can't find anything in an undercounter application maybe consider a counter top model? That may lower your price as well. Don't give up though. I wish I could tell you that you will find a good deal but honestly in the time that I've worked for a kitchen equipment company I have yet to see a home ice & water dispenser for less than $1000, even when it is on sale. Look for free shipping, too. Our company is always offering free shipping on ice machines so I'm sure there are other offers out there as well. Good luck! I had a bad experience with a GE fridge with internal ice and water, although neither was plumbed in the one I used. I'll paste a response I gave to another poster on the subject and add that the veggie bins frequently came off their rails and were difficult to get back on. ------ During our whole house reno, we stayed in a house with a GE FD fridge. Internal water, but not hooked up. My initial excitement as finally using a FD fridge faded quickly with two doors to open and close many, many times a day. Good thing I had a chance to test one out before I bought my new fridge. Can't stand FD fridges now that I've used one. The temperature of this unit was all over the place. For no good reason first thing in the morning it would be five degrees warmer...or maybe colder with frozen lettuce. No rhyme or reason to it. As to noise....I wouldn't exactly call it quiet. The galley kitchen was semi-open to the family room. The fridge was at the far end of the kitchen and my chair was at the farthest other end of the family room. I had to turn the TV up and grit my teeth while the fridge ran as it was so loud. Overall, I was not impressed with the GE fridge. So glad I love my new one.

Believe you're talking about two issues 1) scale/deposition and 2) taste. Scale/deposition can be handled via water softening. Taste can be handled via filtering -- typically via activated charcoal stack. Taste is a very individual thing. How far you should go is up to you. In my case, local city water is 7-10 grains hard; about 200ppm TDS; and tastes distinctly alkaline, which is a region-wide characteristic. It leaves scale on heating elements and bad tastes in coffee, tea, rice, pasta,.... just about everything. I have a softener delivering zero grains to everything. Also have RO unit with sink spigot delivering water at 2ppm TDS which is also piped to the ref. ice-maker. Anything consumable in my household that is prepared using water gets it from the RO spigot. Many people do not like the taste of soft water or RO water and have their personal favorites among the bottled waters. In any event, you should start out by knowing what's in your water now. Have you had it tested? Interestingly, although you talked about filtration and all your various concerns, you said nothing at all about whether or not your water tastes good/bad/neutral. Nor did you say whether or not you've had trouble with it previously.
