Help with selecting fridge - Kitchen Aid, Samsung or Jenn Air?
Comments (11)I have had the Samsung French door for about 3 months and absolutely love it. Who knows why, but the crisper drawers keep vegetables fresher longer than the Whirlpool Gold SxS it replaced (and I like the Whirlpool--I just replaced when I went to stainless). You'll find that VERY quickly you get used to where stuff is and you'll open the correct door. I do admit that for the first month I kept opening the left door when I was looking for the freezer. But now I'm fully trained and open the correct door. Husbands may take a little longer to train. ;-) The bottom freezer is very sturdy and you will love the handle and ease of pulling it out, even when loaded. Fridge temp is super steady, even in the door. As you may have read, the ice maker's a little loud when it drops the cubes, but it's a small price to pay, IMHO. I really love this fridge and the French door configuration. Loads of room. Very quiet while running. Nifty blue lights. I'll give it an "A."...See MoreOne-Week Review of Jenn Air Pro Range (and Dishwasher)
Comments (17)Nice bit of "Jenn-air" history, hvtech42! My only disagreement with it would be to "Lump all the JA products together" in the "History Lesson". I have no experience with the JA cooking products, (cooktops, ranges, ovens~~~etc). But I do have a lot of experience with a Jenn-air Fridge and in fact, I've done a lof of research on them. Back in 2006, I was looking for a 48" built in fridge. Back then, I only had 3 choices, (or at least that's all I could find in stores and on the net). One was GE, since I had a GE S X S full sized fridge I was going to replace, (I could not get icemaker parts even during it's one year warranty)!!, & It leaked and rusted out the sides of the fridge~~sooooo~~~~GE was out of the running, (back in 2006). The other choices were SZ and Jenn-air. Apparently SZ was having evaporator problems back in 2006, (some say it was a copper problem, others say it was caused by copper tubing and aluminum fins on the tubing)~~~~anyway~~~SZ was rated "Dead Last" in reliability by Consumer Reports~~~~yeah I know, but I took time to research the evaporator problem and found out enough about it to scare me off! Jenn-Air "S X S as well has built ins" have been rated the #1 fridge for reliability by readers of Consumer Reports since 2006, and today I believe it is "Tied" with another manufacturer for the #1 position, SZ is about 4 points below, (So not significant, at least to me). The Jenn-Air of 2006 was "Way Ahead of it's Thyme". It offered conveniences and attributes that even most fridges today don't offer. It was one of the first to use the variable speed compressor, very quiet and efficient and great temp control. It has digital readouts and settings for 3 different areas of the fridge, (Meat Keeper, Chrisper and main compartment). It has a 4th digital readout and control for the freezer. It has crank up and down shelves---luv those, so handy when encountering a tall bottle or whatever! The fridge also has built in Diagnostics The disgnostics will check the speed of every fan in the fridge, it will check compressor speed, check the flap operation between the fridge and freezer, all in all about 31 diagnostic test~~~~~sooooo~~~~if I ever have a problem with the fridge, I should be able to pretty well "Nail down" which part is causing the problem and make sure the appliance repair company has it, BEFORE they come out and have a "Look SEE" as they do with most fridge repairs. So, great history lesson, but I think you have to (at the very least) split the JA Fridge from the JA cooking appliances to really see "The Whole Picture"! Unfortunately, today, 2014, it looks like Whirlpool may have removed a lot of the things I really like about my JA Fridge, The crank up/down shelves, The 3 different temp settings for different areas of the fridge, and I would bet money they removed the "Diagnostics" Too!! Comments (7)I agree with avidchef. I bought a Jenn-Air DW, ref, warming drawer, and oven for a few reasons: got a rebate; the handles matched; they got good reviews on Consumer Reports. (cooktop and drawer MW are other brands.) That was 3 years ago and I wish I had found the forums then. We've been disappointed in the performance of the DW, and the refrigerator gets cold spots that freeze lettuce among other things. Things may have changed since 3 years ago, but from what I've read here many times, it's better to buy the best in each category rather than relying on one brand to make excellent appliances in each category. Wondering about your 2 choices though... have you looked at others? I believe that Bosch dishwashers, being in metric measurements, are a bit smaller than US brands. Before we bought our current DW, we compared the lower rack of a Bosch and a KitchenAid DW, and the KA had more room....See MorePremium Appliances Brand comparison; JennAir
Comments (24)I went with Miele dishwasher and Thermador built in 36" french door fridge. I haven't decided on a range top yet but waiting for a deal on a floor model. Probably Thermador, Bluestar, or Wolf. I got good deals on the dishwasher and fridge as they were both floor models. I have owned both Bosch and Miele dishwashers in past homes and both are very good but the quality of the materials are a bit better on the Miele. You see it when you pull out the middle drawer. One rolls smoothly and easily and the other doesn't. Also lower washer arm is SS versus plastic. One other item is the top edge of the door is plastic painted to look like SS on the Bosch (except for their very top end models) and these tend to wear away from being cleaned (just wiping down with a sponge) after a couple of years. I really like the Thermador fridge and I am extremely impressed with their CS. By the way the compressor is the same in all three BSH brands. The differences are mostly cosmetic with the Gaggenau having a SS liner versus the plastic liner in most brands. I was having an issue with the open door alarm and Thermador sent a factory rep out very quickly to fix it. Turns out is is just a simple adjustment on the doors that makes contact with the switch that needed a minor adjustment. Service rep was fantastic! I have previously owned a SZ and I have to say this seems to be just as good and in some ways more practical with larger door bins....See Moreplllog
