Comments (0)While shopping for hoods, DH and I spotted a killer price for a floor model 36" Vent-a-Hood XRH18 Excalibur. It was hard to get a good photo of it. Its color is lighter and more of a cool blue IRL. If you're interested, contact BASCO in Portland, 1411 NW Davis St, Portland, OR 97209, (503) 226-9235. It's open to the public but they do encourage appointments. They also had at least 2 wood hoods with liners, also Vent-a-Hoods. Comments (21)Depends on the purchase. There are some that you could offer a new $30,000 car to them for $5 and they'll haggle over the price. To me, those people lose all credibility. When I bought my first new vehicle and was selling my old Buick a guy kept trying to get me down in price. He sat there for an hour till I finally said this is it, take it or leave it, then he tried again. So I raised the price! The wife looked startled and said "That's HIGHER!!" I said yes and it's going to keep going up. I told you my best price and I'm not sitting here all day for free. At that rate I'll keep it as a second vehicle. The car was cheap and worth more and they knew it. So I also made them drive us down to transfer the title and pay the transfer fee. Their cheapness cost them actually. Another favorite was when I had the computer store and a guy came in to upgrade his computer. He wanted to haggle on prices after I gave him the quote. We always gave a "best shot" price, well most of the time anyway. It wasn't an expensive upgrade and he goes, "well for that you can kinda throw in a video card on that, right?" So I go, "Sure! I can throw one in.... for $25.00" and I smiled. He thought he really pulled one over on me, grabbed the deal and I walked over to the shelf and took the card and added it into the box for his stuff... and the price tag on the card was $24.95! Comments (12)I think you've gotten some good advice so far. In general, I've found a lot of variation in antique stores and have much better success with shopping my local Craigslist and an estate sale. The prices have been better as well as the condition. Some things that give me cause to consider paying more is both the condition of the antique and who the original manufacturer is. If it's made by a well known manufacturer (Baker, Drexel, etc.) and has stamps on it (or even the "genuine mahogany" stamp that is on some pieces) that makes me more confortable since I am still a novice with antiques. I feel these things will be what other buyers would look for and I'm more confident it will hold it's value over time. That said, ultimately it's how much you are willing to spend. We all know when we go to a new furniture store the minute we purchase an item, it's going to depreciate (quite a bit in many cases)--whereas with antiques there is still a better chance it will hold it's value and won't depreciate for a few dings and scratches. That particular piece does look over-priced--at least in terms of what I would be willing to pay. I'd like to know what is so unique about it? Is it a particular style that you need go with other furniture in the room? Do you see this as a focal point in the room? How much do you have to spend? If it's something that exactly suits your needs, you can afford it and you really want it, start with $375 and be prepared to settle around $400. I doubt they'll sell below $400 if it's being sold by an antique dealer. And, if you are prepared to take a risk on loosing it, leave them your name and phone number and tell them to give you a call if they change their mind. The antique stores I've been at have different dealers that rent space in the store and so they definitely want to keep the merchandise moving so that they can bring in new stuff--so if may depend on other factors like if they have more merchandise ready to bring on the floor....See MoreShould we haggle with our kitchen/cabinet designer?
Comments (6)You don't say whether these are all custom cabinets, different semi-custom lines, etc. and knowing that would help. Also, knowing the arrangement you made on getting the bids / designs would also help. I assume from the way you phrased it all of these provided free design service and a bid. If thats the case, I see no issue with going to any of the three and asking them to tweak their design and bids based on elements you like from other designs. Its not like you would be handing over detaile plans - but rather saying to the other two what if we did this. That said, I would ABSOLUTELY haggle with the high priced one. I too had 3 bids - different cabinet lines, etc and we liked the highest priced one the best - but they were out of line in terms of costs with the others. I put a spreadsheet together showing the different elements of the job and compared each quote and shared it with the high priced one. I told him we were interested in having him do our job but his prices were out of line with the other bids we obtained. I also offered to be flexible in timing - letting them do the work sooner rather than waiting a few months like we initially planned so they could fit it in during some downtime. In the end, he dropped his price to be much much closer to the others and we went with him and were very pleased with the results. HAGGLE, HAGGLE, HAGGLE !!!!!
