350 CFM hood, will it be sufficient for an electric stove?

I decided to buy a Broan 350 CFM hood that fits my bill.

Will this blower power be sufficient for my electric range which is 30 inches.?

Also , while reading other posts I came across people posting they have only 6" or 8" duct vented.

What do they mean by that.? My handy man is going to install it for me and doesn't speak English.

However I would like to get some knowledge on some road blocks I might face during installation. I plan to vent it from the kitchen directly to the roof via the attic.

I assume I have to buy ducts?? The broan comes with a damper.

It has nothing to do with gas vs. electric and everything to do with how you cook. Do you simmer veggies and soups, boil water for pasta? Probably be ok. Do you do a lot of high heat sauteing, searing and wokking that generates a lot of grease vapors? It will be inadequate but better than nothing.

As far as duct is concerned, you need duct (like stovepipe but metal color not black) to get from the hood through the roof or out the wall. (I'm assuming you are venting outside; if you are doing a recirculating installation, you won't have any duct to worry about.) For your unit I would imagine you require 6" diameter duct pipe to get from the hood to wherever it gets outside, but read you manual to be sure. If you are going through the wall behind the stove, one 12" piece should do it. Anything else needs to be measured.

Thanks capecodcook for your input. I do cook a lot. ...mostly frying and wokking and little deep frying.
When you say inadequate, does it mean it takes longer time for the blower to remove the smells. How much CFM should I look for minimum?

A 36" by 20" hood with a 450cfm blower is sufficent. A 42" by 24" hood with a 600-700cfm blower is ideal. It is not overkill but ideal. It will allow you to capture more steam,smoke,and grease at lower noise level. You will have more mechanical capture so the blower has to do less work to pull effluent into baffles/filters and the blower does not need to rev as close to capacity to remove the same amount of air. Ask your GC about local building codes and makeup air. Some require costly makeup-air in the 350-450cfm range. If the limit is 450cfm then a 450cfm blower is a no brainer. I think the Ladies in the Kitchen forum are more informed about visual/aesthetic issues.

Currently I have no ventilation. I don't even have a stove pipe, so we sometimes have a lovely "gas" smell in the kitchen. I do little frying/sauteeing b/c the wall behind the stove gets so gross! So I'm looking forward to doing more! But only on one burner at a time. And the griddle is strictly for pancakes (so no fat frying). The stove is 39", so I'll need the 42" hood. Eventually I'll have a cabinet unit on one side only. I *think* the 600 would be between $200-400 more (I was quoted 1471 for 400cfm at 18" high vs 1855 for 600cfm and 30" high. So those prices encompass 2 different heights as well as blowers. And rats: just realized those prices probably don't include those nifty cute bands that give the hood its retro look. Oh shoot!!!! Why does everything stylish have to be soooooooo expensive!!!!!???????TheHusband and I are not $2,000-hood-people. Rats, rats, rats!!!!!!! How big is the diameter of your round duct, or what dimensions is your rectangular duct? How much make-up air are you able to provide? The more air is sucked out of the house, the more "make up" is needed. Air is not compressible (unless under a lot of pressure) so you need to replace every cubic inch you send out of the house.

I don't know the answer, but if at all possible, the hood sounds like something truly unique to your house & definitely worth saving. The capture area is enviable & I suspect a liner to retrofit the inside with a proper sized blower will be no more expensive than a new 48" vent system. Any chance we can see a photo?

We had a Zephyr Whirlwind at our last house for our 30" electric range. I wouldn't want less than that. It was 525 CFM.

It's not a question of taking longer, it's a question of smoke, grease, and odors escaping into the kitchen and not making it into the hood.

Weissman is absolutely correct. Without knowing your exact hood I would expect it is also not nearly as deep as your range surface so that when you cook on the front burners, where most of us saute and wok, a lot of the vapors are going to go right past the anemic draft a 350 cfm blower is going to create. From what you describe, I would look for 600 cfm minimum and at least 24" deep and preferably 27". If the vapors get past the hood, they will never get extracted. They will settle on the ceiling, walls, tables everywhere else because the draft created by an average hood will not suck them back in-that's why depth is so important, to collect them before they can escape. If they get by the front of the hood, they are gone for ever.

I dont get it. The CFM I mean.
A Broan model that has dual centrifugal blower with 300 CFM costs $550. Another model of Broan with CFM 460
costs $360. On what feature should I base the selection now. Looks like this this is going way over budget for me.
