Just the 2 of us, and since I did a red themes table a few weeks ago, I used pink and white....

Pretty Kathleen! Really cute with the hearts hanging down. Your pink tablecloth is very nice, that is one color I don't have yet in a cloth but hope to get one soon. I love your silver chargers- hope to find some of them also.

Of course the food is ALWAYS yummy!!

You have a Tillandsia cyanea, a favorite species of bromiliad. Knowing the specific kind you have is essential to being able to care for it properly. Bromiliads comprise a very large family, and like all families, the members have some broad similarities as well as significant differences. Think about it...when you look at your own siblings or your offspring, do you wonder what planet they call come from? Unlike other bromiliads, I'll recommend that you investigate methods to secure your "Pink Quill" (common name) in that pot. Growing in a potting medium does not come naturally to Tillandsias and this one is no exception. It would have been fine and happy if planted in something like an orchid mix. Epiphitic bromiliads such as tillandias are often called 'air plants'. That is because they live up in the trees or cliffs and collect moisture and necessary nutrients in specialized hair-like cells called trichomes. Trichomes, for epiphytes, can be located all along the leaves but especially towards the middle. The foliage is adapted to steer any rain or even condensed mist towards the center. Get a plant mister and some distilled water. You will simply need to keep the mister filled with water and spray your plant thoroughly every couple of days. Watering and feeding at the roots is far less important than the frequent foliage misting. Yes, the plant will need fertilization which is also accomplished by misting. Never use fish oil or other such fertilizers on your plant, but a simple, water soluble product that yo can mix at a very low rate. By the way, most bromiliads are purchased for the colorful bracts surrounding what are usually insignificant blooms. The spike you are disappointed in IS what this bromiliad is all about. You could look a pictures of a hundred flowering bromiliads and the story is exactly the same: the colorful, exotic part we are all attracted to are modified leaves surrounding the flower....they are called bracts. Many different plants have very colorful bracts that disguise the puniness of their floral display. Poinsettias and Dogwoods are two that pop into my mind immediately. It is unlikely that you will ever see more than one or two of those bright little florets emerge from the bracts. I'll link you to the google images page so that you can see a few gazillion examples just like yours. Enjoy your bromiliad while it is blooming. Who knows how long this period might last, since your plant was artificially forced to bloom. It might be several months! Towards the end of the bloom period, you may begin to see small divisions at the base of your plant. Allow these to grow a bit before carefully excising them carefully from the mother plant. The collecting of bromiliads is a HUGE pasttime. Part of that reason is that the family is so diverse. We have to research the requirments of each new plant we bring into the collection, as the care requirements are likely to be unique from others. But they aren't for everybody, that's for sure. Brittneysgran, someone needs to put you out of your misery. LOL I guess it was only fair, though, since you were the first to declare that you had figured it out. I got a kick out of seeing you at least momentarily baffled. Who was your Pal? Was it A. MudPlayingFamilysMom in SC? B. Dianna? C. MudPlayingMomsFamily? The correct answer is: All of the above! MudPlayingFamilysMom IS Dianna. Yes, I packed and mailed your box. Boxes sent by me are often easily recognizable by the (um, let's just call it creative) packaging methods I use which enable me to pack a heck-of-a-lot-of-stuff into a single container and yet have extremely fragile items and even potted plants arrive safely. To say it bluntly, I probably send the ugliest packages of anyone. ;o) Part two of the answer is that your Valentine gifts weren't chosen by me alone. The kids get into the act of shopping, choosing gifts, sometimes making something, & sharing. We had a blast making packages for people this year. So, it was from Mud..Mom's Family, as well! Shirley, I hope that you enjoy the contents for years to come and look forward to the day that we hear that those hoyas have intertwined. Won't that be so cool?! My screen name is so loooong to type. Kathleen, once again, you amazed me! Not only by the quality of your table setting, not only by the menu (oh! it's only 9 AM here and I'm hungry now! BTW, I will go to the supermarket to buy some chicken stuffed with some cheese: I'm the worst cooker you'll ever meet) but also by the fact that, when I see your pics, I think "that's not for me: it's too expensive to have such beautiful table items" and, once I read the prices you mention, I realize that it's so affordable that, even I could have such a beautiful setting! Here you go, Jo: Central Market's Pan-Fried Hatch Crabcakes 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, picked over to remove cartilage or shell 4 green onions, green part only, minced 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro 1-1/2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning (I omitted) 4 tablespoons plain dry bread crumbs 1/2 cup roasted Hatch peppers, peeled, seeded and diced (roasted poblanos would substitute nicely here) 1/4 cup mayonnaise salt and pepper to taste 1 large egg 2 cups panko (Japanese bread crumbs) 1/2 cup vegetable or peanut oil for frying Gently mix the crabmeat, scallions, herbs, Old Bay seasoning (if using), bread crumbs, diced peppers and mayonnaise in a medium bowl, being careful not to break up the lumps of crab too much. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Carefully fold in the beaten egg with a rubber spatula until the mixture clings together. Divide the mixture into cakes based on the size you desire, making sure that all cakes are about the same thickness. Place the formed cakes on platter and cover with plastic wrap. Chill in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours. Just before cooking, remove the cakes from the fridge. Place the panko in a shallow dish and dredge the crabcakes in it. Gently shake off any excess. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Gently lay the crabcakes in the skillet. Pan-fry until the outsides are crisp and browned, about 4 minutes per side. Drain the cooked crabcakes on paper towels and serve immediately. Are your dishes white or ivory colored??? I am in the market for ivory dishes, but can't find just what I want/what DH will tolerate :^) They have to be off white to work with my old transferware patterns.
Now that I have hi-jacked your thread...I apologize....Let me again tell you that your pink/white/silver combo is lovely!

Thanks, Ladies..on to St Patrick's Day!

Jay, I just made a reg pie crust and put it on the heart shaped plate and shaped it that way..sliced apples, lemon, sugar and cinn, and baked..that's it..
The dishes are white, I don't have cream colored except my Lenox.

The heart in the flowers is a porcelain heart my cous sent mme when my mom died, It is very pretty and I keep it on the china cab all the time...

Been busy sorting out and getting rid of a few things, and doing some much needed yard work. Had little GD here all day yesterday, so played with dolls, games, and did lots of coloring! LOL Oh, and I got all my Valentines stuff packed up and put away! Will wait till first of March to put out the St. Pat's things I think.

Karen had to get a new computer, she will be back soon I'm sure.

I need to get out and do some shopping, hope I can find some good bargains like you always do--and I have cleared a little more space to store more! Yahoo! Luvs

I'm back. What a huge headache. My old computer fried suddenly, and even took the monitor with it. Luckily the hard drive with all my stuff was ok. However had to get a new computer, a new monitor, then have a tech spend hours retrieving my old stuff and getting it on new computer. Yesterday I was busy trying to get all my personal things sorted out and back to normal. Between the huge expense, and the scary problem of "almost losing" everything important, its been less than fun the last few days. (new computer is wonderful and FAST. Guess my old one had been dying quite awhile, but I was blaming AOL for the slowness and problems. LOL.)
In my next life, I need to be a computer tech, do you know how much they get an hour???? Jeeez. And it took 3 hrs to find and re-install just ONE special file of saved mail that was very important. Boy was that hidden on the old hard drive! I thought it was gone forever.

Kathleen, everything looks beautiful and your DH is a lucky man to get all the romance and frills eating at your table.

Glad Karen is ok..miss Sandi too, and hope J is doing ok.

It is freezing here, no gardening here till late April, and we can't plant til May,,Mother's Day is usually when it is safe from frost...

I am putting out my St Pat's early. Mar 18 th it will have to come down as Easter is the 23rd!! Too close together!!

Oy, Karen, what a mess. Glad you are back, and that at least you are happy with your new computer. My new Dell has lost it sound, and I can't fix it. Of course it is just old enough for them not to help me for free! So, I can't hear you! LOL

Did you made your centerpiece yourself? It's so lovely! So many roses, what a work!

And, obviously, I don't talk about your heart-shaped cakes... well, don't talk about them: have to go to sleep!

Kathleen, what a lovely table. Most people, including myself, seem to use red for Valentines Day but your pink table is so pretty and has a vintage feel. I am always amazed by the food your prepare. It looks delicious, you should put your own little cookbook/dinnertable book together. I for sure would buy it...:)

How very kind of you, Tam..Yes, red for valentines, but pink too. I have to use all this stuff I have, LOL..

Prosperity, the heart wreath is artificial roses, and a little vase (actually a candle holder from Michael's) with some pale pink mini carnations.

The goblets were on clearnance for $1 in Pfaltzgraff..a bargain, but not as good as Mary's 50 cent red wine glasses!

Kathleen, very romantic & the pink is a nice change from all red! As always, the food is the star though! I wish I wasn't so lazy about cooking, but truly burned out in that department after all these years!
