Bosch- Gas oven or Electric oven ???

The oven portion only. Is gas or electric better ?

All posters will most certainly go right to heaven !!

We have a Bosch free standing gas range of recent vintage and the oven has an optional convection feature. Its temperature retention is very accurate. Its convection feature, the first we've ever had, is very good at browning roasts. The self-cleaning works as well as that of our old electric oven. We have not baked delicate things like souffle's, so cannot vouche for its ability in that department. But for everything we've done with this oven, we've been very satisfied.

I've finally decided on the 30 inch electric Bosch wall oven with convection. It seems from the many posts on ovens, if you can have it all, l generally prefer a gas cooktop and the electric oven so hopefully this applies to the Bosch products.

kajl, the 800s, like Rockrisley's 500s, are very new offerings from bosch so I don't know that you'll be able to gather much intel about them. I have a Bosch oven but it is the now 3 years old 700 series which was made in Europe (France? Germany? Italy? some place else basically.) and based on a very different platform. I have a very good feeling about it as for my needs it is very good. However all the new offerings are a completely different animal as they are based on a different (Thermador?) platform, are out of a completely different shop, and have completely other operations and controls than the older Bosch oven models. So I and most anyone who bought a bosch oven more than 6-8 months ago now can have nothing of value to share with you. My own personal druthers is to give a new models a miss. They are almost always prone to teething troubles if not rank mis-designs.

Electronics above the oven need to have a fan running to prevent them from overheating. The fan will run during use and for some time after the oven is turned off. It's an annoying fact of life and I suspect that some models and makes have quieter fans than others. Gas vs electric makes no difference.

I tried to do this - i had a dacor oven and dacor cooktop over it and i wanted a thermador cooktop (new). It didn't work. The tubing collided with the mold of the oven. Only same manuf seems to work in my research. You have to see if it is supported even then. Your appliance store might help you here.

Hi ColorLady, Here are my thoughts on stainless vs glass. Stainless shows fingerprints, water spots, and scratches easily. Yes, you should use a special cleaner on it. Ceramic glass has a special cleaner as well but it's easier to clean up in the event of a spill or boil over. Every stainless cooktop I saw in stores was scratched up so it was a turn off for me. Also I have a stainless fridge and am constantly wiping it down because it smudges. The Electrolux Icon rangetop ($1899) we purchased is a ceramic glass top. When I was looking at cooktops (not rangetops) I liked the GE because it was ceramic on glass. I was more concerned with knob placement that cooktop surface because I use big pans and have read that large pans that extend over the knobs (on a five burner cooktop) have melted the knobs due to their placement on the cooktop. Searching through these forums is a bit intimidating - my budget doesn't allow for the really high end - turns out my floor is going to cost a lot more than I expected. I searched Consumer Reports and they are pretty diligent with mid-range products. The Kenmore Elite 3249(9) $1250 got their best review and it's glass on ceramic. We looked at the Bosch 36", the Thermador XLO, and every mid-range brand. I liked the Kitchen Aid because of knob placement but didn't like that it was stainless and the display was all scratched up. Ok when do I get to heaven then? That's OK I am very happy to stay here on earth...anyway... I have the Dual fuel range which is gas cook top electric convection oven. So far the oven has worked well and the convection is fast. It makes great crispy dog treats.

Not sure you can get convection with separate heating and fan with a gas oven.

I read somewhere that gas produces a moister heat than electric. I don't know what this means to food but maybe you might get slightly better roasting with dryer heat.

I grew up with electric stoves and ovens. Then experienced gas. I think you can control the heat better with electric. The gas flame just tends to flare the heat all over the place increasing the temperature of the kitchen in the process.

I also have the Bosch dual fuel slide in range. This was because I enjoy baking and wanted an electric oven. I have been very happy with it though I was concerned by folks who had posted here about the fan noise. I have not found this to be a problem. It does make noise but it's not all that loud and when it's turned off the fan goes off even though the oven stays hot for awhile. I do like the "hot" notice that stays on until the oven has cooled down. Of course I haven't baked that much since I've gotten my range because DH and I have been on an "eating plan" (sounds better than the "d" word---right?!) and all of the holiday baking I used to do didn't happen this year. Oh well! Good luck with your decision.
