new house will have treated wood screened porch
Comments (5)Mar cia, I am familiar with Carilion. When we were shopping, we spent quite some time in different models at Carilion. If we would have gone in a subdivision, it would have definetely been Carilion. Beautiful place and I love the concept. What a brilliant idea.....develop a neighborhood that encourages community living! You're going to love living there I'm sure. The location is also perfect for everything that we love to do. It's out of the hussle and bussle, but close enough to not be a problem. Our property is actually about 6 miles north of Carillion. In my mind, the Carilion concept lends itself more towards a wood screen porch. The whole architectural direction is a throwback, and they didn't have aluminum porches in that era. If it were me, I'd go wood and stain it with a solid stain to go with the house colors. We're staining ours, but may use a transluscent stain to lend a more rustic feel. So when do you move down?...See MoreScreened porch design - must haves? Spigot?
Comments (15)I grew up in a very rural area, and I remember visiting older family members and old, old houses. I remember clearly the "working screen porches", where people'd sit and string beans or slice apples for drying. Details I remember: - They were always rectangular because that provides for better furniture placement. - Yes, always a spigot. Never attached to the house; rather, a pipe sticking straight up through the flooring, always near the main screen door. - The floor was always wooden, and it always slightly sloped downward towards one corner. In that corner was a hole (approximately 2" round) with a removable plug. When the floor was scrubbed, the lady of the house used a stiff push broom to push all the water towards that corner, and she could push the water out through the hole. - The porch always had shelves for large enameled bowls and food waiting to be processed. - Many people had porch swings inside the screens. - Most people had a porch of this description on both sides of the house. Why? So the lady of the house could always work in the shade. I think I got off topic, but I remember spending so many hours on those porches....See MoreHelp Picking Hydrangeas for New House Front Porch Border
Comments (44)I agree with Dingo about sun exposure. H. arborescens doesn't much like full or western sun, though it wants some sun to bloom really well, so it should be fine in the exposure you described above. H. paniculata in my garden is fine in full day sun, though farther south it benefits from some shade, but with the bright shade involved here, it still should bloom and grow well with morning sun. I have a friend with Bobos in part shade, part sun and they look happy. One difference between the two is that H. arborscens suckers some, so for my Annabelle, I have to remove suckers once or twice a year (ususally fall and then in spring for the ones I missed) if I don't want it to overtake the surrounding shrubs. I don't know if all H. arborescens are quite as vigorous as Annabelle. H. paniculata doesn't sucker so in my garden is less work. I had an injured knee that made much garden work difficult to impossible for about three years, and here's my Annabelle, unchecked for all that time, but if kept maintained it is a lovely plant.(windowsill sits at 4' to give you height.) I would look at the summer color and fall color of various H. paniculatas and H. arborescens in your size range along with the shape and density of the flower heads and how upright the branches are. Only you can decide which appeals to you the most. They should all bloom well for you....See Morelayout help for kitchen in new location in house
Comments (2)Your dining room is far from the kitchen and not too easy to bring food and stuff from the kitchen as you have to go through your foyer. Can you move the windows in the kitchen? If you can then ideally the fridge could go on the wall to the right of the sink, then have your dishwasher and the range could go where the fridge is now shown. (see revised drawing) Right now as it's designed you walk in from the mudroom and you're practically in your workspace. I would move the door from the mudroom down as far as it can go as shown below. I would also switch to a counter depth fridge....See MoreGreenDesigns
