Very cool! Her projects always are. But I still don't understand why you have to go to all that trouble. Couldn't you just bake an inkjet copy onto clay covered with TLS? She made a point about it being on white clay because you can see through it once it's removed from the paper. But the paper was white. Do you see what I'm saying? Couldn't some papers be baked right along with the clay? I know I remember a project (online) about baking stickers then coating with UTEE.

Just musing here...
I'm happy to see something where you don't have to run out to a copy shop!

My favorite part of that episode was how she made the clay come over the image with a little texturing!

Did you notice only the one she was working on looked like a good dark transfer? The others were kinda foggy and milky looking?

Congratulations Daisy! So how big of plant did you get? Bboy I couldn't agree more with you that the soil should match the plant, and I can't think of many plants that need more water & more nutrients than gunnera. I read some of the articles from your link, but most had to do with excess nutrients -- not so much of a concern with a plant that can grow leaves up to 8' across (a real nutrient pig) and is being heavily watered. The real concern for success with this plant is moisture retention, which this kind of compost does well. The year we started using it at our last house (1 1/2 dump truck loads) it cut our summer water use almost in half. Our plants exploded like they were on a super fertilizer even though we used none. Everything was healthy and darker green than the year before. In this house, I have 2 areas where they only put the thinest skim of of compost under the grass, instead of the 6" I wanted. Those 2 areas are always way behind the other areas in growth and are the only 2 areas I've ever had disease on the grass. If a phd like Dr. Chalker-Scott who is high on opinion & low on facts wanted to come & tell me compost is too high in nutrients & it won't hold moisture, well I think I might have to say she needs to get off the lecture circuit & out into the garden more. ;^)

IF you watch the cutting & just as the first root starts (as a swelling on the stem) & then transplant to any potting soil & mist the cuttings it will continue to root & you loss will greatly be reduced.

Woo-hoo! Caught it! I thought the girl's name rang a bell! Did you hear what she said about the gin? Something about the cheapest being the least filtered...? I'm still not sure I understand how that makes a difference, but it's worth a try. Too bad it won't work with inkjet. :-/

Thanks for the link, Rosie! Well, I was hoping the site told how much gold + how much turquoise she used. I tried my own mix and put way too much turquoise. It was TOO green so I just put the rest of my scrap of turquoise in. Turned out a really cool olive, though! :-) Did you notice in the show she said the powder was "Statuary Bronze"? (It looked cool! But I don't think they have those at my local craft shops.) I checked it out at Houston Arts and here's what they say: "Authentic Metal Powders" are metal and carry the characteristics of metal and retain the look and feel of metals. Â If "Authentic Metal Powders" are left unsealed, Brass, Copper, Bronze, Antique Copper, Antique Brass, Oxidized Copper, and Statuary Bronze will patina or oxidize and give a rich antique look to your artwork. Â Metallic powders can be annealed in the oven. This works on items, which will not burn, at 300 degrees for 5 minutes. This technique lends itself well to polymer clay. Does that mean they'll turn green? I've had inks and embossing powders "oxidize" and it's just a kind of dullness, not a nice patina. Oh, yeah, don't you just love those microscope slides!!

I didn't notice that; I must've glanced away!

I've been seeing a flurry of discussion about this here & there on the web and from what I understand, you must use MATTE photo paper. (Now, I don't think I've ever seen it in matte...) It's not specified on the website, it only says Epson. But I read that it should be Epson Matte Photo-Quality Inkjet Paper.
One person said she tried it in a toaster oven, too. She smoothed the liquid clay with a credit card, then baked 10 minutes at 300Â° F She recommended this temperature ONLY for liquid clay and said it turned out great in that little time.
However, I wouldn't even try my toaster oven! I know that the temp fluctuates and will burn clay. Not that I haven't been known to make the same mistake twice --LOL!-- but not that one!

That was an intriguing project (on Carol Duvall). Have
been experimenting with various ways/papers to accomplish
the same thing.
Gleaned the paper to use from some great gal on Delphiforums.com (polymer clay site). Tried it and it works pretty well. (Of course, the first time I printed my pics on the wrong side -- you have to have better light/eyesight than I have to tell the difference.)
The paper is Epson Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper, Stock #
SO41062. Got it at Staples - 100 sheets for less than
$15. By the way, it is Matte, not glossy.

If you can't get all of the paper off when you've done
the TLS process, soak your image in some warmish/hot
water then rub the remnants off with your fingers. The
picture on the clay doesn't come off.

But if I ever get tired of doing it that way, I'll do as
Lia questions, and just slap some picture on a slab of
clay and perhaps coat the top and bottom with the TLS!
