I know about improvement but was in no shape to mix all that stuff in myself. Was lucky to get someone to rototill it for me. We ground up all the grass and everything, the grass was healthy. Then it took several months to settle down to level as it was mounded for months (and bare). I have all that stuff you mentioned, but it is too late to do the whole works. My idea of gardening is dig, chop it up as fine as possible, plant, then use Miracle Gro (not on my new roses). I just had 12 roses planted spaced out there, the horticultural student who did that for me thought the soil was ok and drained well. Thanks for the advice, will read the link tomorrow. I'll worry about the other seeds later, but you did give me an idea. Baby's breath grows in a huge mound if you are lucky, don't need a whole row of the stuff, so I can scoop the soil out a few places and replace with potting soil. BB you cover 1/8 inch which is a little better than surface sow. My peat I found gets crusty when dry even mixed with the potting soil, probably mixed in too much the last batch. Maybe if I throw in some more pearlite that will help. The potting soil holds moisture better than anything yet I've worked with, and then I can mist like you said, although if it heats up again, it will be like four times a day and not every other day because the surrounding dry soil will grab the water before I put the hose away so I'll water that, too. Thanks a lot for the help. Maybe I can get it a little better, not sure how now, don't have a composter but can dress it with something at some point. Just can't work it in, it will have to leach down and let the plants do the work, maybe throw leaves on there in the fall, plenty of those. I wish I could do everything exactly the right way, but I have to do most of it by myself and do well to get anything done. I think I'm having more rototilling done, and this time I'll throw that stuff on there during the process and let it get worked in that way. I didn't know any better before. Sorry I'm so long-winded.

I'm moving to another zone 5 that can get colder in the winter but generally for a shorter winter than we have here and overall warmer night time temps than we have here, if that makes any sense. Moving from Sierra mountains to midwest. Well I have tossed two so far, repotted one that looks to have some root life left and threw my two knock outs in a bucket together because the roots seem to still have some life so we'll see. None of thse have leaves and only one has a couple inches of green cane. I'm moving Saturday and don't have time to wait and see what is going to live or not so I'm giving them all the hope I have if I see any signs of life but at the same token do not want to haul dead plants because space is limited. I don't know which roses are own root, only that these have survived more than one winter here as planted in pots but this spring is tough for them.

Any time is a good time to divide hostas: at your pleasure. And any size is the right size to divide - whether it be a two-eye toddler or a 50-eye senior - your choice. I agree that washing as much of the soil off and then pulling the plant gently apart works beautifully - with some of them. Others need a little encouragement with a knife across the crown, but try to avoid the roots. Still others are stoloniferous, so their main feeder root needs to be cut from the parent plant. As long as you have a few roots attached to the above-ground part of the plant, and provide even moisture after the surgery, generally they should do very well. I routinely rescue chipmunk-dug hosta root fragments from our local arboretum (which has a hosta garden to DIE for), and none have so far expired. Mind you, I make sure they get no more than the teeniest amount of direct morning or evening sun - direct midday sun would cook them in a blink, even up here in Ottawa. Steady bright shade is the key to success. Since most hostas generally do well in saturated soils, it's a good idea to provide lots of moisture in the planting hole when you're ready to plant (dig the hole, fill it with water, push some dirt in it, plonk the plant in, water some more, fill with dirt to the top, water again).

I don't think your laptop has HDMI out but it does have S-video out, correct? You could probably pickup an S-video cable pretty cheaply.
